Detroit teenager wins five
gold medals at Maccabi Games

Swimmer Lynn Kline's five in-
dividual gold medals highlighted
a number of top-rated perform-
ances by Jewish teenagers from
the Detroit area at last month's
Maccabi Youth Games. The bi-
ennial competition, which drew
participants from 30 American
citieis and five foreign countries,
was co-hosted by the Jewish
Community Center and the De-
troit chapter, Sports for Israel.
Lynn took first place in the 50-,
100- and 200-meter freestyle
events for 15 and 16-year-old girls
with times of 25.61 seconds, 56.02
and 2:02.14, respectively. She also
won the gold medal in the 100-
meter breast stroke, finishing
with a time of 1:11.41 and the
200-meter individual medley,
which she swam in 2:19.29.
Scott Castleman won the gold
medal in the tennis competition
for 12-year-old boys while Jen-
nifer Goldfarb finished first
among the 12-year-old girls and
Nicole Rival won the tennis
competition for girls, 15-16.
In table tennis, Detroiter
Michelle Mantel won the gold
medal in the singles event for
girls, 12-14.
Dana Dobransky captured
three gold medals in girls' gym-
nastics. Dana's 9.1 mark was good
enough for first place in the bal-
ance beam and her 8.85 score net-
ted a gold medal in competition on

the parallel bars. She also won the
individual, all around gymnastics
gold medal with a score of 35.55.
Detroit team members also won
five gold medals in track and field
events. Natalie Greenspan cap-
tured gold medals in the 100-
meter dash and 200-meter dash
for girls age 13-14, with times of
13.3 seconds and 28 seconds, re-
spectively. Caroline Alkon
finished first in the 1,600-meter
run for 15 and 16-year-old girls.
Her winning time was 6:09.5. The
4x100-meter relay team of Steve
Goldman, Howard Petosky, Craig
Aronoff and Barak Barfi finished
first among the 12-year-old boys
with a time of 1:01. In the
4x200-meter relay for 12-year-old
boys, the gold medal was awarded
to Goldman, Petosky, Ethan Hut-
ton and Ian Flashner. Their win-
ning time was 2:05.5.
In the team events, Detroit won
gold medals in girls volleyball and
girls gymnastics. The boys vol-
leyball team finished second.
Detroit-area silver and bronze
medal winners were Joshua
Hoffman, Carrie Nosanchuk,
Aaron Rochlen, Brad Keywell,
Eric Schwartzberg, Larry
Bergman, Steve Goldman, Debby
Hecker, Nancy Hecker, Missy
Warnick, Debbie Schlussel, Adam
Goldstein (Flint), Bob Bernstein
and Libby Stern.
