Dr. Golden named for Bond honor

Tam-O-Shanter Country Club
member Dr. Donald Golden will
be the guest of honor at the club's
11th annual Israel Bond tribute
dinner to be held Oct. 24 at the
club. Dr. Golden will receive the
State of Israel's Jerusalem City of
Peace Award in recognition of
his outstanding dedication to and
support of Israel, civic and philan-
thropic causes."
Since 1972 when Tam hosted its
first Bond dinner the club has
held the national leadership in
club-sponsored Israel Bond
events. For 11 years in a row,
Tam-O-Shanter Country Club
has sold more Bonds than any
similar organization in the
United States.
This year's dinner co-chairmen
will be former honorees D. Dan
Kahn and Jack Shenkman. Kahn
also is chairman of Israel Bonds
for Metropolitan Detroit;
Shenkman is an associate chair-
man.
In the early 1940s Dr. Golden
left Wayne State University to
become part of an optometry firm
where he helped develop the then
struggling practice of fitting con-
tact lenses. He was among the
youngest of only 25 men in the
United States capable of this pro-
cedure.
Becoming involved in the re-
search and development of con-
tact lenses Dr. Golden traveled,
with his wife, Norma, all over the
country lecturing on this new
product. Later, cooperating with
the renowned • German scientist,
A. Mueller-Welt, he opened a con-

tact lens laboratory where the
first "contact-less' lens was de-
veloped.
Working wih his wife, Dr. Gol-
den began to build the chain that
is known as D.O.C. Optics Corp.
Sons Michael, Richard and Ran-
dal head up different aspects of
the business. Dr. Golden is a
member of the Association of
Michigan Optometrists and the
National Association of Optomet-
rists and Opticians.
Earlier years' honorees were
Warren Orlick, Kahn, Dr. Jerome
Kaufman, Sam Rich, Maj. Gen.
William Weinstein, Dr. Sherwin
Lutz, Dave Muskovitz, Robert
Willens, Shenkman and Herbert
Rechter.

guage program for Russian im-
migrants, and eventually became
director of the group services di-
vision and of the Center Day
Camp.
Previously, she taught high
school for several years. She holds
a B.A. degree from the University
of Michigan, and an M.A. degree
in linguistics from Oakland Uni-
versity.
As executive director of Hillel,
Ms. Fishman is responsible for the
non-educational activities, in-
cluding financial matters, office
management and building con-
cerns.
She also is the professional re-
source person with regards to sev-
eral committees and the board,
and is the administrator of school
communications and board
policies.
