He has held nearly all of the key leadership positions in the annual fund-raising drive and is a major gifts chairman for 1985. Frankel has been a driving force behind the Jewish Associa- tion for Retarded Citizens, sup- porting the development of a series of residential homes for the organization. Among his local civic duties, Frankel is presently on the board of directors of the Nationally and on behalf of Is- rael, Frankel has played an active role in the work of the Jewish Na- tional Fund, of which he is a trus- tee, and established the Samuel and Jean Frankel Traditional School in Jerusalem. He has traveled to Israel on numerous oc- casions and was a member of a special mission of American Jewish leaders in 1971, when he met with Prime Minister Golda Meir. The program committee is com- posed of the co-chairmen of APRI and LZA: Willie Hampton, president of Metro Detroit APRI; and Norman Naimark, past president of LZA, Robert E. Lee, national representative of the Amalgamated Clothing and Tex- tile Workers Union; and Selma Goode, director, Michigan Jewish Labor Committee. A discussion period will follow. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Voter registration Council effort The Jewish Community Coun- cil of Metropolitan Detroit, as the community relations arm of De- troit's Jewish community, feels it is incumbent upon the organiza- tion to establish mechanisms to encourage broader participation in the electoral process by both Jews and the general population eligible to vote. To achieve this, the Council has established an Ad Hoc Voter Registration Committee chaired by Hermine Silver. Susan Moiseev, chairman, and Fred L. Goldenberg, associate chairman of the Council's community rela- tions committee, oversee this project. The Council committee ar- ranged for deputies from the cities of Oak Park and Southfield to reg- ister voters today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center Jimmy Prentis Morris Branch in Oak Park and at South- field Plaza, Southfield Road, and 12 1/2 Mile Road. City of Southfield deputies will also be registering voters at Southfield Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Volunteers, who will be present to assist the registrars are: Mrs. Silver, Ms. Moiseev, Goldenberg, Norma Shifrin, Gerald Macey, Elma Rader, Ida Burstein, Diana Leverton, Rose Schwartz, Abe Gornbein, Reva Gornbein, and Betty Grant. Federation names appointees Marvin Meltzer has joined the Jewish Welfare Federation as senior staff associate of planning. For the past ten years, Meltzer has served as director of public af- fairs for the Southeastern Michi- gan Transportation Authority. George A. Cohen, who has been JWF assistant controller and manager of accounting since 1976, was recently named staff associate of United Jewish Charities. Reva S. Farenback joined Fed- eration as staff associate of plan- ning. Ms. Farenback has served as staff to the United Way budget- ing committee in Albany, N.Y. Shelly Knoll has been named Nominees to the Board of Governors Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Hall. supervisor of financial services at Federation. Prior to joining the JWF, she was head of her own ac- counting services company. Joyce Luft has been appoined staff associate, public relations. A graduate of Boston University's School of Public Communication, she was formerly advertising coordinator of a local marketing firm. Ellen Shochet, staff associate, Women's Division, comes to Fed- eration from an internship with the Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Fund in Baltimore. Miss Shochet holds advanced de- grees in administrative social work and Judaic studies.
