Prophetic source
of Presidents' quote

The 40th President of the
United States, Ronald W. Reagan,
speaking to the International
Convention of B'nai B'rith in
Washington, D.C. on Sept. 6, re-
stated his Administration's policy
towards any sort of discrimina-
tion and bigotry against any citi-
zen and on any pretext. To reas-
sure his audience that he means
business in this respect, he quoted
the famous and very relevant
statement by George Washing-
ton, written in reply to the greet-
ings by the Newport, R.I. Hebrew
Congregation in August 1790.
The Reagan quote was correct.
But the oddity is that both
Presidents failed to reveal the
original souce of that quote. It was
the Hebrew Prophet Micah (who
lived and preached in Judea in the
Eighth Century B.C.E.) who first
described the blessed condition of
peace, resting on impartial justice
and universal human rights, in
such an ever appealing, immortal,
utopian vision:
"Each shall sit, every man
under his grapevine and figtree,
and none shall make them afraid,
so says the Lord of hosts." (Micah
4:4).

The misguided
Jewish leaders

A resolution recently adopted
by the Central Conference of
American Rabbis called on Israel
"to make territorial compromises
in return for peace . . . the legiti-
mate demands of security must be
reconciled with the dignity,
human right and the right of
self-determination of Palestinian
Arabs."
Mirabila dictu — brilliant
Rabbi Alexander Schindler suc-
cumbs to a discredited doctrine of
"trade territory for peace," a de-
luon peddled by peacenik doves!
An enormously costly surrender
of Sinai yielded a dubious "peace."
King Hussein said to Rabin (then
Prime Minister) that even if Is-
rael surrendered 99 percent of the
West Bank he would not make
peace. He fears assassination if he
accepted less than pre-1967 bor-
ders. Sadat's "scrap of paper" net-
ted him Sinai; Hussein expects
the same U.S. pressure to win all
he wants.

"The
of
determination" is a euphemism
for a contiguous state controlled
by the PLO and Soviets — a mor-
tal danger to Israel. Yielding up
