During this month one should try to set aside some time each day to review the Mahzor, including the special Torah and prophetic readings. This will help us feel "at home" with the prayers and the readings. Try to think of the prayers in a personal way. • In this Torah portion Moses tells the people: "You stand before the Lord your God — all of you — Aryeh Meir is former rabbi of Temple B'nai Israel in Emmerson, N.J. and has recently joined the staff of the Radius Institute. He is a member of Havurat Reyim in Teaneck, N.J. JOIN 500,000 MEMBERS AROUND THE WORLD l j FIGHT ANTI-SEMITISM HELP JEWISH YOUTH - to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God . . . I make this covenant not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day and with those who are not with us here this day." We too are included in those words — the covenant of Sinai was made for us as well. So, in this season of spiritual renewal, we renew our part of the covenant. We stand together — old and young, men and women, the ger (newcomer) and the born Jew, the "wood chopper and the water drawer." Together we declare our alle- giance to the Covenant and to the God of Abraham and Sarah. It is an opportunity to experience the sense of oneness of Israel, to turn back to God, as individuals and as a community. With Rosh Hashanah only a few days away, the words of this Torah portion have special mean- ing: "I have set before you this day life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life . . . by loving the Lord your God, heeding His commands, and holding fast to Him." This is a season for choosing, for turning. In the words of our teacher Adin Steinsaltz, "Teshuvah is a spiritual reawakening, a desire to strengthen the connection be- tween oneself and the sacred. It is a return not only to the past, but to the divine source of all being." Our tradition clearly teaches that we have the power to change, to improve, to turn. We pray for the ability to make the right choices in the new year to come.
