Jordan may buy
high-tech weapons
from France

Paris (JTA) — Jordan may re-
ceive sophisticated weaponry
from France, including a counter-
part of the Stinger anti-aircraft
missile which the U.S. Congress
recently denied Amman.
Defense Minister Charles
Hernu, who ended a three-day
visit to Jordan Monday, said be-
fore his departure that France
will help Jordan equip its armed
forces with advanced weapons. A
joint Franco-Jordan military
committee has been set up to
study Jordan's arms needs and
decide on the priority of their sup-
ply, Hernu disclosed.
"It is impossible for France not
to respond to Jordan's legitimate
requests for arms," the French de-
fense chief said. He met in
Amman with Jordan's Defense
Minister, Ahmad Obeidat and
Chief of Staff Gen. Sharef Zeid
Bain Shaker.
France has already sold Jordan
36 Mirage F-1 combat planes and
aircraft manufacturers here hope
Jordan will be able to acquire an-
other one or two squadrons, plus
combat and transport helicopters.
Since its failure to acquire the
America'? "Stinger," Jordan has
expressed interest in a French-
produced missile with similar
specifications. But it might decide
instead to buy a cheaper Soviet
model. King Hussein is expected
to visit Moscow before the end of
the year.
While in Jordan, Hernu visited
air bases and watched Jordanian
pilot and ground maintenance
crews display their stills. France
is believed to have agreed to train
Jordanian air crews and
engineering personnel at bases in
France. Hornu will report on his
mission to President Francois
Mitterand.

Shabbat candles lit
on the space shuttle?

Jerusalem (ZINS) — A Jewish
astronaut cannot celebrate the
Sabbath holidays in space, accord-
ing to former Chief Rabbi Shlomo
Goren, who has researched ques-
tions concerning the first Jewish
astronaut, Judith Resnik. She
will not have to light Sabbath
candles when she goes in space, he
said.
Goren added that since time is
calculated on earth according to
the sun and moon, it cannot have
an effect on persons traveling in
space. "The earthly days, nights
and holidays simply do not exist
for the traveler in space," he said.

Housing in !gra&

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — A five-room
apartment in Ramat Aviv (146 sq.
meters) costs between $150,000
and $169,000. The price of a single
home (277 sq. meters) in Ramat
Aviv is $328,000. The most ex-
pensive apartments in Tel Aviv
are those located in the Dizengoff
Center, where a two-room apart- -)
ment costs $109,000. A three-
room dwelling in that neighbor-
hood is $165,000 and a four-room
flat costs $197,000.
