Haifa — Researchers at Techn-
ion's Center for the Safety of Men
at Work have recently directed
their efforts toward the problem of
back pain. According to the re-
search, 70 percent of workers ex-
perience back pain in Israel's in-
dustries, and some 200 million
people suffer from back pain
around the world. Dr. Isaschar
Gilad, biomedical engineer, has
introduced an element of "human
engineering" into the study, view-
ing the body as a special kind of
machine. "We simply must learn
its limitations," he explains.

During my recent visit to
Brazil, I was both relieved and
impressed by the strength of or-
ganized Jewish communal and
religious life, especially in Sao
Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. I was
L--7, relieved because much of the
-9 media reporting on- Brazilian
Jewry (and Latin American
Jewry generally) concentrates on
anti-Semitic episodes and/or PLO
activity. Those reports, out of con-
> text, leave the impression that
Brazilian Jews are living on a vol-
cano about to erupt. That simply
is not the case.
Brazil is a multi-cultural
society — Portuguese, Indian and
black African — and does not
have a strong European Christian
,D theological tradition of anti-
Semitism as does Argentina. As
,Y-- Justice Ministry officials told my
colleague, Jacobo Kovadloff and
me, they will not tolerate any
anti-Semitic activity.
Brazilian Jews are concerned,
however, over the fact that Brazil,
with its crushing international
debt, is heavily dependent on
Arab petro-dollars and Arab oil,
particularly from Iraq and Saudi
Arabia. There are some five mil-
lion Arabs in Brazil and an active
PLO movement.
While vigilant over their PLO's
anti-Israel activities, Brazilian
Jewry is mainly preoccupied with
internal Jewish life — stemming
intermarriage and assimilation,
and nurturing the commitments
of young Jews to Judaism and to
Israel.
