LOCAL NEWS
Europe not kindly
to Jews: Torczyner
BY HEIDI PRESS
Local News Editor
Jacques Torczyner, president of
the World Union of General
Zionists, issued a stern warning
last week about the attitude of
Europe toward Israel and Jews in
general and about the American
media's treatment of Israel.
Speaking at Cong. Beth
Shalom's annual dinner on behalf
of State of Israel Bonds, at which
$210,000 in Israel Bond subscrip-
tions were realized, Torczyner
warned that "in general, the atti-
tude of Europe towards Israel and
towards Jews has changed and
goes in a direction which should
really worry us."
Torczyner alluded to the recent
elections in Corsica in which he
said the "anti-Semitic party of
LePen got more votes than the
Communists." He added
"everywhere the Holocaust is for-
gotten," but said that "the new
anti-Semitism that they some-
times call anti-Zionist . . . is the
same phenomenon.
On the topic of a reunified Ger-
many, Torczyner issued another
warning: "There is no doubt in my
mind that one day Germany will
be reunified with the same results
as we had in 1914 and 1939."
He cited Greece as another
thorn in the side of Israel because
of what he called that country's
pro-PLO, pro-Arafat policy. "Now
that Greece needs money from the
U.S. it has toned it (pro-PLO pol-
icy) down a little."
The Soviet Union, too, proved
troublesome, Torczyner re-
marked. "The Soviet Union will
not let any Jews out as long as
relations between U.S. and the
Soviet Union have not improved."
Regarding relations between
the U.S. and Israel, Torczyner
said that they "have never been
better than they are at present,"
but faulted the American media,
calling it an enemy of Israel.
"Israel always had hi-partisan
support in the Congress of the
United States, that we've always
had the support of American pub-
lic opinion, but the only enemies
of Israel in America are (the tele-
vision networks) ABC, NBC and
CAS because they are Jewish
owned, like the New York Times
and the Washington Post." He
said when the NYTimes has good
news to print about Israel, it puts
it on the obituary page. When
there is bad news, he said, the
Times puts it on the front page.
He added that the American
media reports one way about the
world in general and in another
way about Israel because "these
Jews want to show how objective
they are."
On the topic of religion,
Torczyner blasted religious lead-
ers in this country for not speak-
ing out against Rev. Jesse
Jackson's and Black Muslim
leader Louis Farrakhan's anti-
Semitic remarks. In addition, he
blasted the Democrats for not
passing a resolution condemning
anti-Semitism at their national
convention. "It's something that
should give all Jews in this coun-
try a lot to think about when they
vote in November."
The Israeli scene did not escape
Torczyner, and he spoke with
some sarcasm about the Israeli
elections. He called the militant
