Expert offers advice
to cult-wary parents

New York (JTA) — An expert
has offered two items of advice to
Jewish parents who fear their
children may be approached by
cult recruiters: they should tell
their children there is no such
thing as a free lunch, and that
parents whose children do join
such cults should not blame them-
selves.
The expert is Dr. Neil Maron,
director of the Boro Park
Psycho-Educational Services in
Brooklyn. He has completed a
study of cult involvement, having
recently received a doctorate in
clinical psychology from Yeshiva
University's Ferkauf Graduate
School of Psychology.
One of the key themes of his
study is that young Jews who feel
socially isolated are the most
likely to join cults. He said poten-
tial cult members usually "have
fewer close friendships and fewer
romantic involvements. They are
socially isolated in the quality of
their relationships."
Maron studied the Unification
Church, Children of God, Church
of Scientology, Divine Light Mis-
sion, Hare Krishna and the Way
International.
In his advice to parents, Maron
has said that they must teach
their children to recognize and
question the motivation of the
"friendly recruiters" who have
been sensitized to approach young
people during stressful periods of
their lives. In urging parents of
children who join cults not to
blame themselves, Maron said,
"blaming does not do anyone any
good."

New York area
offers vacations
for older citizens

New York (JTA) — A special
vacation scholarship program has
been established by the United
Jewish Community of Bergen
County to give older Jews the
chance to enjoy a vacation away
from home, according to the
Council of Jewish Federations.
The community's committee on
older adults set up the program
through an endowment fund of
$10,000 contributed y former
local residents now living in
Florida. A period of respite for
adult children caring for older
parents is another goal of the pro-
gram.

Baltimore charities
to produce two
television series

time in its history, the Associated
Jewish Charities and Welfare
Fund (AJCWF) of Baltimore will
produce two TV series to educate
and inform both Jews and non-
