The tour brought priests, ministers and rabbis into direct contact with all seg- ments of Israel's population — Moslem, Christian and Jews. Co-leaders of the trip were Richard Lobenthal, ADL Michigan Regional Director, and Rabbi Michael Monson, director of the Hillel-JACY (Jewish Association for College Youth) campus division of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York. One day was devoted to the theme "Am I My Brother's Keeper?" It in- cluded a visit to Yad Vas- hem and a seminar on the implications of the Holocaust. As one com- mented: "The evidence of the Holocaust confronted us at Yad Vashem but the nowness of the Holocuast experience demonstrated itself to us over and over again. We saw that it was a part of the reality of the de- cision making of the politi- cal leaders, of people living on kibbutzim and aca- demics. The Holocuast is very much alive." Rev. Elizabeth Platz of the University of Maryland, the first woman ordained by the Lutheran denomination in America, said she came to Israel because of her percep- tion of the nature of the campus ministry today. "We have a sizable Jewish population at our campus," she declared. "The issue of Israel is a central one, which elicits much dis- cussion among Christian students. It is important for me to understand how the reality of Israel is linked with all the questions raised about it. To be knowledge- able on Israel today is criti- cal in my ministry." Rev. Ralph Moore of the University of Pennsylvania emphasized that the tour gave him a different perspective on the Holocaust. "The Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv," he said, "helped place the Holocaust in the context of the history of the Jewish people. For the first time, as I viewed the development of Jewish civilization, I realized the enormity of the atrocity — the destruction of that civilization which had flowered for over four hundred years in Eastern Europe." Rev. Moore also put his finger on the dynamism of Israel when he pointed out the clear definition between a society which is status quo and one that is developing and growing. "Israel," he stated, "is a living organism which has faced many chal- lenges, has fought to protect herself, and yet all the time has attempted to integrate a high standard of morality and ethics into its everyday decisions. Israel has tried to insure that the creative ten- sion which has motivated Judaism through the ages be a part of the society of the nation. Israel can never be a merely status quo country — it continues to be a de- veloping society striving for the highest ideals." Rev. Donald Postema of the University of Michigan commented on the various population grodps in Israel by noting that they "seem to walk past each other rather than talking to each other. The Jewish people still is struggling with being a majority and learning to deal with minorities. This is a tremendous challenge. We believe though that many healthy steps have been taken." Father Loiselle captured the diversity of life in Israel by describing a scene which caught his eye: "On Satur- day, the last day of Rama- dan, I was walking through the old city and I came to an alleyway where Arabs were celebrating, Armenians were streaming by and the Chasidic Jews were on their way to the Wall for their Sabbath prayers. It was a kaledoscopic vision of the richness of the many reli- gious traditions of the city of Jerusalem." ,assallassmal. 4111111Nowal111O1h. mmea•samss. inste ■■■ 1111 ■■ • .11111O1M11011110.11111111 IfilINOIMINI11111•111111101111 •es ■ •••••••111111 ■OM► mis ■ auges.– Imis lessesseess - ell im11111111O11 lawallimam 1111M11111111C. 11 ■ •111•11111Tha ■■• ••■■••■■■ ••1110 • Illasfi• ■ 11 ■ 11111 ■ • , • . ■■is■■me■■• •Ilmals ■ Give every NEWBORN the advantage March of Dimes T"IS S - ACE C.ONT RIBUT By
