Maple, West Bloomfield 851-2980 FAMILY DENTISTRY • No ,fee ;for consultation • Jew Patients Velcome In recent weeks, Zubin Mehta, the music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and con- ductor of the New York Philhar- monic, has been a central figure in the New York Philharmonic's de- cision not to buckle under the Malaysian government's demand that Ernest Bloch's Schelomo: A Hebrew Rhapsody be removed from a scheduled performance in that country. Malaysia's Moslem extremists take offense to the piece. Malaysia was to have been an early September stop on the New York Philharmonic's 12-city Asian tour. When first asked to blot out the Hebrew Rhapsody number, the Philharmonic agreed. Outraged cries from Jewish organization spokesmen and from political figures obliged the musical tour planners to re- consider. Instead of canceling the Bloch composition, the Philhar- monic, with Mehta's approval, dropped the Malaysian appear- ance altogether. Long a champion of Jewish causes, Mehta left the podium in sorrow and anger in Oct. 1981, when insults and threats from concentration camp survivors greeted the Israel Philharmonic's encore selection of the prelude to Wagner's Tristan And Isolde. Aware of Israel's ban on Wagner music, dating from 1948, Mehta met the challenge head-on: "I will not subject my musicians any- more to this kind of circus. The music of this great genius has got to be played once and for all in Israel, which has the finest music-loving people in the world." Soon after, Menachem Begin asked the Israel Philharmonic to disown criticism leveled at Mehta by a deputy and to laud Mehta as "a great maestro and friend of Is- rael." -A statement issued by all but two of the Israel Philhar- monic's 120 members and every member of the board backed Mehta. On Nov. 2, 1981, he was voted the orchestra's music direc- tor for life. Seven Arts Features At last, a turbo for people who don't just measure performance on a scale of 0-50. Introducing the 1985 Peugeot 505 Turbo. It was designed for those who judge performance by acceleration — by how quickly the can be propelled from Point A to Point B. Such people should be impressed by the new 505 Turbo, seeing as it can get them from 0-50 in a commendable 6.5 seconds. But it was also designed for those who measure performance in other ways. Take Peugeot's four-wheel independent suspension. Its shock absorbers with eight valves rather than two. And its full foam seating, Autobahn instead of old-fashioned springs. All combine to the 505 Turbo's remarkably comfortable ride. And all are points worth considering if Points A and B are very far apart. PEUGEOT Nancy Black Pat. Bloomfield • 851-5586 Philly AJCommittee seeks end to racial violerfce in city Philadelphia — The Philadel- phia chapter of the American Jewish Committee last week called on Mayor W. Wilson Goode to explain "what actions are being taken by civic authorities to halt . . . violence" directed against Hmong residents in west Philadelphia. The letter from the Committee was prompted by a story in The Philadelphia Inquirer describing individual acts of terrorism that the oriental group has been sub- jected to, forcing many to leave that section of the city. "As Jews with a long history of persecution as w•11 as citizens of the community," Mr. Berkman added, "we cannot remain in- different to such a state of affairs." The Jewish group described this as "an intolerable situation."
