Laurie Litberg

Laurie Alyse Litberg will share
her bat mitzvah, by proxy, with a
Soviet Jewish girl at Temple Is-
rael on Saturday. The daughter of
Cheri and Darryl Litberg.of Far-
mington Hills, Laurie will share
her special day with Irina Pin-
kusevich.
Irina has attained the age of bat
mitzvah, but is unable to worship
freely in the Soviet Union. To
dramatize Irina's plight and to
express concern for her future,
Laurie will observe her bat
mitzvah with Irina in absentia.
Irina is the daughter of Rafail, a
musician and Svetlana Pin-
kusevich. Their visa to Israel has
been denied since 1979 because of
insufficient kinship.
Laurie has received the return
receipts from the registered let-
ters she has written Irina, but has
not yet received any replies.
Laurie hopes these letters will be
a great source of support to the
Pinkusevich family and demon-
strate to the Soviet Union
authorities that Irina and the
Jews of the Soviet Union are not
forgotten by other concerned Jews
who are free to practice their
faith.
The practice of twinning with a
Soviet Jew has special meaning
and impact for Laurie and her
family, since her late paternal
great-grandparents were Soviet-
born Jews from Kiev, not far from
Irina's home of Karkov. They too,
were unable to freely practice
their faith prior to their emigra-
tion to the United States.
Because Irina is unable to
celebrate her bat mitzvah in a
temple in Karkov, Laurie will
read from the Torah for both of
them. Including Irina in every as-
pect of this special day, Irina will
light a candle, by proxy, on
Laurie's cake at the celebration
following the service.
