Archeologists discover early locations of Israeli urbanization New York — Findings from the latest season of excavations at Tel Aphek indicate that the urbaniza- tion of Israel may have begun some 5,000 years ago. This dis- covery by archeologists at the an- cient site of Aphek Antipatris near Petah Tikva has helped clarify the debate surrounding the exact date of the beginning of urbanization in Israel. . According to Prof. Moshe Kochavi of Tel Aviv University's Institute of Archeology, who di- rected the excavations with Dr. Pirhiya Beck of Tel Aviv Univer- sity and Prof. David Owen of Cor- nell University, there is evidence that urban settlement had begun at Aphek by 3,000 BCE. During a press conference at the excavation site, Prof. Kochavi said that dig- ging in the southwest corner of Tel Aphek uncovered a tower dat- ing back to the early Bronze Period around 3,000 BCE. Although this 12th season of excavations was to be the last at Tel Aphek, Prof. Kochavi said there will be one more excavation next summer to try to discover more about the earliest settle- ment there. During the recent six-week ex- cavation, major discoveries in- cluded a rectangular tower erected on virgin soil, which ap- parently guarded the southwest- ern corner of the city during the first phase of the early Bronze Age. In the second Bronze Era, the tower did not exist and private houses were built over its ruins when settlement expanded west- wards. B'NAI MITZVAH Joel Jackson shares bar mitzvah Joel Jackson, son of Dr. Ger- shon and Jeannie Weiner, grandson of Fred and Marian Mann of Oak Park, will become bar mitzvah at Cong. Shaarey Zedek on Saturday. Joel will share his bar mitzvah with Valentin Ficik of Odessa, Ukraine. The Ficik family first applied to leave the Soviet Union in 1975 to join their parents and Michael Ficik's brother, Valen- tin's uncle, in Israel. Since that time Valentin's grandparents have passed away. At their graveside Valentin's un- cle, Zalik Ficik, promised to do "everything so that my brothers would come to Israel." Zalik Ficik writes that the Ficik family lives only on their nerves, each day looking forward to new blackmail and misfortune. They are on the verge of despair and frightened for their children. Joel has tried to contact his "twin" on numerous occasions but no mail has yet been received. The family will attempt to reach the Ficiks by telephone prior to the bar mitzvah.
