Back to School Special'

The Jewish Community Center
will begin its fall semester of
classes on Sunday.
Beginning next week, there
will be classes in ceramics, collage
painting, drawing and painting
(still life) watercolor and
sculpture in clay.
Dr. Stephen Bertman, professor
of classical and modern lan-
guages, literatures and civiliza-
tions at the University of
Windsor, will present a color-slide
and lecture tour "Art Capitals of
Europe" on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.
beginning Oct. 16 for six weeks.
There is a fee.
Deanna Sperka, artist and tour
guide, will conduct a museum and
gallery tours class on Wednesdays
and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Dr. Sid Bolkosky, professor of
history, University of Michigan -
Dearborn, will speak on "Heri-
tage — Civilization and The
Jews," based on the Channel 56
series on Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, Nov. 6
and 20 at noon. Luncheon will be
served in the library. Luncheon
reservations required by calling
the Center, 661-1000, ext. 164.

Active Adults, a day program at
the Jewish Community Center
Maple/Drake building for retirees
in and around the West Bloom-
field area, will begin its fall
schedule Monday.
On Mondays, the Walking Club

will meet at 10 a.m. in room 310.
Yoga with Diane Young is held at
10:45 a.m. in room 310.
Tuesday's schedule includes
games every other Tuesday at
12:30 p.m. in room 301.
Midrasha-on-Wheels, "World of
Our Mothers and Fathers," with
Sharon Schwartz meets at 2 p.m.,
room 315.
On Wednesday, the Walking
Club with Joyce Weckstein will
meet at 10 a.m. in the library.
"Yiddish and You" with Nancy
Rosen meets the third Wednesday
of the month at 11 a.m. in room

Curto at 10:30 a.m. at the pool;
Israeli Film Series at 1 p.m. in
room 315 and "Jewish History
Through the Eyes of the Talmud,"
a discussion group with Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg of Cong.
Bais Chabad on the third Thurs-
day of the month in room 315.
Super Senior Fitness with Ada
Bandalene is held at 10:45 a.m.

The fourth Friday Book-n-
Brunch Club with Center libra-
rian Anne Parker meets the
fourth Friday of the month at
noon in the library, beginning
Oct. 26.
Registration is required and
there is a small fee for some of the

The senior adult department of
the Jewish Community Center in
cooperation with the Greater De-
troit Society for the Blind an-
nounces another series of work-
shops for the visually impaired.
These sessions will be held
every other Wednesday begin-
ning Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Mor-
ris Branch.
Sighted volunteers are sought
who would participate in the
workshops with the goal of assist-
ing the members.

Sinai, seniors join
for lecture series

The senior adult department of
the Center and Sinai Hospital
have joined for a series of lectures
entitled, "Staying Well."
The next lecture in the series
will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in
the assembly hall of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Branch of the Cen-
ter. Dr. Gerald Sikora will speak
on "Taking the Bite Out of Dental
Problems." A follow-up workshop
will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 25.
Admission is free and all senior
adults are invited. For details,

The senior adult department
will join with Channel 2 in a pre-
sentation on "Coping With
Change in Later Years" at 1 p.m.
Sept. 21 in the assembly hall of

Former Detroiter
endows Dropsie
lecture series

Joseph Handleman

Former Detroiter Joseph Hand-
leman has endowed a pair of lec-
ture series at Dropsie College in
Merion, Pa.
"Israel Among the Nations:
Cultural Connections and In-
teractions," a series of four lec-
tures, will take place this fall at
the Joseph and Sally Handleman
Communications Center for the
Study of Man's Humanity on the
college's Merion campus. A sec-
ond series of four lectures,
entitled "History and Identity,"
will be held next spring at the
Handleman Center.
