Archeologist disputes Biblical
location of the Promised Land

GULAG RECORD

The years go by slowly for this family who first applied
to emigrate in 1974.

ALEXANDER, LEAH AND FAINA MARYASIN
KARL MARXA 62, APT. 37
RIGA, LATVIAN, SSR, USSR

WHAT CAN YOU DO? The Helsinki Agreement which the Soviet

government signed allows for freedom of emigration. Let our
voices - letters, telegrams, phone calls - express our protest to
Western leaders to intercede and to the Soviets to set them free.

THIS WEEK WRITE TO:

AMBASSADOR ANATOLY F. DOBRYNIN

1125 16th STREET, N.W.
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036

and request his help in allowing this family to be reunited with their daughter in
Israel.

Sponsored by:

SISTERHOOD OF CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK

on behalf of our "adopted" family.

"To bring prisoners out from confinement"

Isaiah 42.7

New York (JTA) — Prof. Kamal
Salibi, chairman of the Depart-
ment of History and Archeology
at the American University of Be-
irut, claims that the Promised
Land of the Bible was not ancient
Palestine but a 200 mile strip of
fertile land along the shores of the
Red Sea in what is now Saudi
Arabia, Newsweek magazine re-
ported in its Sept. 10 edition.
"Salibi's geographical re-
visionism is based on an extensive
survey of Saudi towns and vil-
lages, comparing them with
thousands of place names found in
the Bible. His method is essen-
tially linguistic," Newsweek said.
His claims are disputed by Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania ar-
cheologist James Sauer, president
of the American Schools of Orien-
tal Research who points out that
Salibi reached his conclusions by
linguistic analysis alone, ignor-
ing the testimony of historians
and archeologists.
According to Sauer, "Ar-
cheologists have come up with in-
controvertible evidence in the
ground that Hebron and
Jerusalem are where the Bible
says they are."

Salibi identified Biblical Heb-
ron as Khirban in the Asir distrfct
of Saudi Arabia. He contends that
King David's Zion is present day
Siyan in the same region and pre-
dicts that excavators will find an-
cient Jerusalem underneath
either Arwa Salam or Ali Shrim,
not far away.
According to Newsweek his
labor of five years "is likely to be
dismissed by most scholars and
scorned by Israelis and Saudis
alike."
But Salibi is sticking to his pre-
dictions.

of the Weizmann Institute in Re-
hovot, police reported. The house
is now a monument and museum.
Several art objects were stolen
from the main reception room, in-
cluding an .ancient Chinese
ceramic figure of a horse, valued
at about $200,000.
