was all too easy to forget that our
third" only totalled 2.5 percent of
the total American population.
The other two "thirds" amounted
to some 95 percent.
This year Jews are being re-
minded of it — and with a ven-
geance. In the Democratic Party,
the Reverend Jesse Jackson ran a
campaign that was almost a reli-
gious crusade. Often campaigning
in churches, Jackson — a Protes-
tant minister — made Christian
theology and rhetoric a hallmark
of his speeches. At the Democratic
Party convention in San Fran-
cisco, he addressed the delegates
in Christian religious terms,
seemingly viewing himself as
more a religious figure than a
political one. Jesse Jackson's
campaign appeal — his rainbow
coalition — seemed to exclude
Jews. His alliance with an out-
spoken anti-Semite, Louis Far-
rakhan, and his frequent attacks
on Jews and the State of Israel
(none of which seemed to affect his
standing in the Democratic Party)
was — and is — deeply alarming
to most Jews.
Equally alarming were aspects
of the Republican convention in
Dallas, during which attempts
were made to fuse the Republican
Party with Christianity.
President Reagan told a prayer
breakfast that those who oppose
school prayer are "attacking reli-
gion." The chairman of Reagan's
re-election committee, addressed
a letter — "Dear Christian
Leader," it began — to 80,000
Christian ministers. In it, he
urged them to "organize a voter
registration drive in your
church." Incredibly, he referred to
his fellow Republicans as "leaders
under God's authority." A Con-
gressman told his fellow delegates
that he prayed that Jesus would
guide the convention in its work.
William Safire, the New York
Times columnist, reported from
Dallas that "today's religious
political movement is un-Semitic
rather than anti-Semitic . . ." But,
he added, only "short-sighted
Jews fail to see the danger to any
minority religion from a Chris-
tian Republicn Party.' "
Most American Jews do see that
danger. For us, "separation of
church and state" is more than a
slogan and more even than a con-
stitutional principle. It is the
guarantee that we will not be-
come strangers in our own land.
