Doug Jacobs, whose shoes come off right at the beginning, has been strumming hi" energetic banjo for 13 years on the telethons . . . from start to finish . . . backed by a Dixieland band always perk- ing up would-be sleepy heads. Doug and wife Nancy were wed in Las Vegas, July 4, so all of America can shoot firecrackers on their anniversaries . . . He plays cocktail hour now, 2:30 to 4 p.m. on new Star of Detroit that docks in back of Hart Plaza. Maggie Allyson celebrated her birthday by answering phones with hubby Bob . . . It's on Labor Day . . . Mickey Goodwin, on his way toward that light- heavyweight championship promise . . . So much applause to the staff at WJBK-TV Channel 2 . . . who do this every year . . . and seem to get better. - True celebrities at the muscu- lar dystrophy telethon aren't the personalities . . . they're those folks out there watching who give anything from $1 up. CHEFS DU CUISINE, on the Boardwalk, Orchard Lake Rd. south of Maple . : . is garnering quite a reputation for its salads that nobody anywhere has . . . The concoctions are made up in the gourmet minds of chefs Pat Vargo, Robert Goodfriend and Debbie Hamilton. Fact lots of people still don't know about Chefs du Cuisine is that besides excellent catering .. . it is also open for retail . . . from appetizers to desserts to complete dinners. About the desserts, try Debbie's Raspberry Roulade . . . joyfully delicious . . . with sponge cake, hazelnuts, whipped cream and fresh raspberries she picks her- self. And if the food you get from Chefs du Cuisine has black pepper in it, chances are Debbie smashed the little beans to smithereens the old-fashioned way . . . with one hand holding a frying pan while the other was inside on a napkin . . . pressing with all her might. THERE IS NOW a sushi- tempura bar in our locale . . . open from 5 p.m. at Wing Hong's, 14 Mile and Orchard‘Lake Rd. . . . It seats only 12 people . . . who watch a chef make sushi . . . raw fish and vegetables wrappipd in seaweed . . . or tempura . . . lightly battered and fried or steamed fish with vegetables .. . Both are served with rice. Wing Hong's sushi-tempura bar is almost like a delicatessen counter, where food is prepared in front of you . . . Two glass cases hold almost 25 different fresh fishes. The sound of eating raw fish may not be appealing to some, but its taste preparation is an in- teresting experience . . . There are people who vowed never to even touch raw fish . . . that are now advocates of its taste . . . The tem- pura has always been a big favo- rite.
