Social Hour Sept. 22, 1984 Selihot, the penitential prayers recited in advance of Rosh Hashanah, will be recited on Sept. 22 by Jews locally and around the world. Temple Israel will have a Selihot scholar-in-residence weekend featuring Dr. Lawrence A. Hoffman, newly-appointed dean of the School of Sacred Music. He will deliver a series of three lectures on the subject "A New Year's View of 5745: Looking Pos- itively at Tomorrow." Sponsored by the Dr. Robert B. Goldberg Memorial Fund of Tem- ple Israel, the series will begin with an address at Sabbath serv- ices at 8 p.m. Sept. 21 when Dr. Hoffman will speak on "Ap- proaching a Golden Age for Ameridan Jews." At the 11 a.m. service on Sept. 22, Dr. Hoffman will speak on "The Third Great Age of Ameri- can Jewish Life: Going from Truth to Art." Following the serv- ice, there will be an invitation- only luncheon, at which Dr. Hoffman will continue the discus- sion. Finally, at a pre-Selihot lec- ture, at 9 p.m. Sept. 22, Dr. Hoffman will conclude the series by speaking on "Searching for God in West Bloomfield, Mich." The program will be followed by a social hour and refreshments. The Selihot service will then begin at 11 p.m., and will offer traditional prayers of repentence that will usher in the High Holy Day season. In addition to serving_ as the head of the Reform movement's school of cantors, Dr. Hoffman is professor of liturgy and related literature at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of reli- gion. Born in Canada, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, and in 1969 was ordained a rabbi at HUC-JIR. He was a student rabbi at Tem- ple Beth Or of the Deaf in New York, where he pioneered in the development of sign language ex- pressive of Jewish concepts. Dr. Hoffman is the author of many articles and five books, the most recent being The Canoniza- tion of the Synagogue Service. He is active in the liturgical re- Dr. Lawrence Hoffman naissance of the Reform move- ment, and has composed Gates of Understanding, a two volume companion work to the daily and Sabbath prayerbook and the High Holy Day prayerbook. Dr. Hoffman travels widely, and has been a visiting lecturer in liturgy at Notre Dame and the Jewish Theological Seminary. The series that Dr. Hoffman is presenting is open to the public with the exception of the Satur- day luncheon. - The Goldberg Fund, which sponsors the series, is named for Dr. Robert B. Goldberg, a confir- mand and graduate of Temple Is- rael. At Cong. Shaarey Zedek, the Selihot service which ushers in the High Holyday season will be held Sept. 22 at 9:15 p.m., pre- ceded by a showing of the film Kaddish. Kaddish will be shown at 9:15 p.m. in Adler Hall and will be fol- lowed by a coffee hour. At 11:30 p.m. the congregation will ad- journ to the main sanctuary where Selihot services will be conducted by Rabbis Irwin Groner and Kenneth Cohen. Cantor Chaim Najman will chant the liturgy assisted by the synagogue choir, under the direction of Eugene Zweig. Both the film and the service are open to the com- munity at no charge. At Young Israel of Oak-Woods, Selihot services will be held fol- lowing Rabbi James I. Gordon's message at 12:40 a.m. At mid- night, there will be a coffee hour in the Berris meeting room. Financial planning series set by Temple Beth El affiliates The Temple Beth El Sisterhood, Men's Club and Married Group will sponsor a three-part series, "How to Avoid the Biggest Mis- takes People Make With Their Money," featuring Audrey Pearl, CFP, at 10 a.m. Sept. 30, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and 10 a.m. Nov. 4 at the temple. Ms. Pearl, president of Pearl Advisory Corp. and Audrey Pearl, CFP, Inc., both of Southfield, is the first woman to attain the Cer- tified Financial Planner designa- tion in the state of Michigan. Her talk will include such topics as: understanding your money and what it must do for you; the economy, where we are, where do we think we are going; and tax strategies for the '80s.
