21 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 14, 1984 • NEWS Jewish Community Center and Australian Jews' complaint against paper's biased cartoon is upheld Melbourne (JTA) — In a precedent-setting ruling, the Au- stralian Press Council has upheld a complaint against a leading na- tional weekly newspaper for pub- lishing an anti-Semitic cartoon last May. The complaint was brought by the Executive Council of Austra- lian Jewry (ECAJ) against The National Times after a full-page drawing was published depicting a satanic cloven-hoofed rabbi slic- ing an infant into pieces against a background of a crescent moon dripping blood. With the other hand, the figure was dropping a bomb on a mosque. The caricature accompanied an article by a pro-Palestinian aca- demic Dr. Jeremy Salt, which dealt with what the newspaper described as the "brutal campaign to drive out the West Bank Pales- tinian." Although the article was highly critical of the Israeli gov- ernment, Dr. Salt did not know of the cartoon and subsequently dis- sociated himself from it in a letter to The National Times, where he described the images portrayed as "highly offensive" not only to Jews but to others. The ECAJ made no complaint to the press council about the arti- cle and made a distinction in its submission between vigorous and even harsh criticism of Israel and incitement to racial hatred of Jews. The ECAJ pursued its corn- Palestine body headquarters hit Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli mili- tary aircraft Sunday carried out a bombing raid on a three-story building outside Bhamdoum in central Lebanon near the main Beirut-Damascus Highway that is said to have been the regional headquarters of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Pales- tine, headed by Nayef Hawatmeh. All Israeli planes returned safely, an army spokesman said. However, the Abu Mussa group announced in Beirut that it was the unit which had been hit in the building and that the officer commanding its artillery code named Abu Hassan, had been kil- led and three other soldiers were wounded when a missile hit an ammunition dump. Beirut radio said extensive damage had been done. Meanwhile, in South Lebanon, an Israel Defense Force armored column patrolled north of the Awali River Monday, to the Kharoub region south of Beirut where heavy fighting has been going on between Druze and Christian forces. The IDF patrols are reportedly aimed at lessening the fighting and ascertaining that terrorists are not massing in the region. An IDF soldier was slightly wounded when a roadside charge was exploded as an IDF .patrol passed by some five kilometers south of Ansariya village. Mon- day's incident followed a warning issued by Lebanon Shiite leader Nabih Berry that Lebanese youth were being trained for suicide at- tacks against Israeli forces in south Lebanon. Neo-Nazi leader with links to PLO tried in Nuremberg Bonh (JTA) — Karl-Heinz Hoffman, a prominent neo-Nazi leader who has a long record of cooperation with the Palestine Liberation Organization, was scheduled to go on trial this week in Nuremberg fox allegedly hav- ing plotted the murder of Jewish publisher Shlomo Levin and his female companion Frida Poes- chke. The murder took place Dec. 19, 1980, in the couple's house in Er- langen, near Nuremberg. Rudolf Brunner, the Nurem- berg prosecutor, told journalists that 60 witnesses, 21 experts and many documents and objects were expected to be brought to court to convince the judges that Hoffman was the man behind the murder. But the actual killing was carried out, according to the prosecution by 29-year-old Uwe Behrendt, a member of the banned para- military Hoffman gfoup who committed suicide in a PLO mili- tary camp in Lebanon Sept. 16, 1981. plaint to the council, the news- paper industry's editorial watch- dog, after Brian Toohey, the editor of The National Times (a left-liberal weekly newspaper published in Sydney) defended the drawing by artist Michael Fitzjames as "legitimate strong comment on Israeli policies." Although the press council is traditionally headed by a judge or barrister, it has no legal powers. But its adjudications are widely published and they set the standard on such issues as bias, journalism ethics and racism. In upholding the ECAJ com- plaint, the council said the draw- ing had gone beyond strong dis- approval of the Israeli govern- ment and used "images which tapped deep well-spring of racial and religious prejudice, thereby giving deep offense to at least some Jewish people through the revival of memories of past perse- cution." In his defense the cartoonist said he did not intend to be anti- Jewish, but was referring specifi- cally to Rabbi Meir Kahane, since elected to the Knesset, who was mentioned in the article.
