In 1973, he went on a mission for
the Department of Defense to
conduct retreats for Jewish per-
sonnel in the U.S. Armed Forces
stationed in Europe. He con-
ducted similar retreats for the
Army, Navy and Air force in 1980
and 1982.
In 1974, he went on a special
mission to the Arab countries and
Israel with Christian and Jewish
leaders to study refugee problems
and explore alternatives of peace
in the Middle East.
Dr. Hertz, through his friend-
ship with the late Yigal Allon,
former minister of education and
general of the Haganah; Simcha
Dinitz, Abba Eban and other
prominent leaders of the Israel
Labor Party, has been close to
Histadrut and the labor move-
ment for a number of years.
The Hertz Youth Center will be
located in the mostly Sephardic
Canaan neighborhood which is
now being rehabilitated and re-
novated. The building will con-
tain sports facilities, activities
rooms and library, and will be the
center for Noar Oved (Working
Youth).
The honorary chairman of this
event is Max Fisher; general
chairman, Stanley Winkelman;
and dinner chairman, Flora Win-
ton, president of Temple Beth El.
Louis Berry, Martin Citrin, Mar-
vin Goldman, Joseph Jackier,
Morris Lieberman, Leonard Si-
mons and Paul Zuckerman serve
as honorary co-chairmen.

The 51st annual Balfour Cele-
bration of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America, Metropolitan De-
troit District, will take place on
Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Ford Au-
ditorium, it was announcedal5Si
Leonard Herman, president of
Metro Detroit ZOA.
Max Sosin and Dr. Lester Zeff
are again serving as co-chairmen
of the Balfour Celebration Com-
mittee.
Starring in the classical part of
the program will be Detroit-born
concert pianist David Syme, who
has performed as soloist with
symphony orchestras throughout
the world.
Headlining the musical-variety
