Bar-Ilan Shabbat will be ob- served throughout the metropoli- tan area on Saturday. Some 25 area congregations will take part in this observance, announced Sherman Shapiro, Bar-Ilan's syn- agogue liaison. The Shabbat observance marks the Detroit community's recogni- tion of the fact that Bar-Ilan Uni- versity, with its student body of nearly 12,000 and with its re- quirement that each take a quar- ter of his or her course-load in Judaica, has become the largest center of Jewish education in the world. Its dual emphasis of aca- demic excellence and basic com- petence in Judaica is unique, and provides Israel with highly trained professionals who are also knowledgeable of their Jewish roots and heritage. The observance is a prelude to Bar-Ilan's annual dinner, to be held on Sept. 18 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Samuel Hechtman, one of the university's founders, will be honored at the dinner for his long service on behalf of Bar-Ilan and the entire Jewish community, both locally and abroad."
