Monument will
honor American
liberators

Peekskill, N.Y. (JTA) — The
final rendition of a 15-foot bronze
monument, depicting an Ameri-
can soldier carrying a concentra-
tion camp survivor to freedom,
done by Nathan Rapoport, has
been officially accepted by the
Liberty Park Monument Commit-
tee.
The committee, based in
Livingston, N.J. gave Rapoport
approval to start casting the
monument, a process expected to
take six months, according to
committee co-chairpersons Luna
_Kaufman of Watchung and David
Kotok of Vineland. "Liberation"
is a monument to the spirit of lib-
erty, they said.
The monument will be dedi-
cated next May 30 at Liberty
State Park in Jersey City, they
said. Kaufman said that, through
the monument, "maybe we will be
able to send a message to all who
see that you can achieve peace
through love of peace, not by the
power of war."

Washington (JTA) — The State
Department stressed last week
that the United States continues
to believe that Israeli withdrawal
from Lebanon "must be" in tan-
dem with provisions for security
of Israel's northern border.
"Lebanon has been and is a tor-
tured country with all kinds of
problems," State Department
spokesman John Hughes said. "To
a large extent, those problems are
caused by the presence of foreign
forces of different nationalities."
Hughes said that the United
States' goal remains "the removal
of all foreign forces from Leba-
non." He noted that Israel was not
the only foreign force there al-
though he did not directly name
Syria.
