THE MOST FAMOUS night-
spot in the world was the Stork
Club, owned and operated by
Sherman Billingsley in New York
City from 1934 to 1965 . . . To mil-
lions of people all over the world,
the Stork Club symbolized and
epitomized glamour and celebrity
life . . . It meant fame . . . It meant
wealth . . . And it meant elegance.
From Humphrey Bogart turn-
ing down a $5 million movie con-
tract to Alfred Hitchcock chatting
with Claudette Colbert, the origi-
nal Stork Club drew as much from
its celebrities as it did from its
public (3,000-4,000 people per
day).
The Stork Club is here now, on
Van Dyke and 10 1/2 Mile, owned
by localite Alan Sklar, who is at-
tempting to recreate the exciting
ambiance of the original Stork
Club.

Anniversary of Paris
liberation marked

•

Paris (JTA) — The 40th an-
niversary of the liberation- of
Paris from the Nazis was cele-
brated last Friday night with a
thanksgiving service at the Great
Synagogue. Jewish war veterans
attended official ceremonies and
laid wreaths on the sites of the
main battles for the city's libera-
tion.
The main official ceremony was
at Notre Dame Cathedral where
Paris Cardinal Jean-Marie Lus-
tiger, himself a converted Jew
who spent the war years in hiding,
pleaded for better Franco-
German understanding. "It is not
enough to forgive and forget," he
said. "We must learn to love each
other."
A convoy of World War II
Sherman tanks re-enacted the ci-
ty's liberation by following the
same route they took when they
drove into Paris on Aug. 24, 1944.
Only a handful of people braved
the summer showers to watch
them, mainly foreign tourists.

London (JTA) — The anniver-
sary of the 1943 Jewish uprising
against the Nazis which began in
the Gialystok ghetto —the second
largest after the Warsaw Ghetto
— was officially commemorated
in that Polish city on Aug. 16, the
World Jewish Congress reported
last week.
WJC monitoring sources
reported that Polish television
gave coverage to the event
The television broadcast noted
"the heroic struggle against the
Nazi aggressor lasted ten days."
The broadcast added: "On the oc-
casion of the 41st anniversary of
the uprising, wreaths and flowers
were laid at the place of Jewish
martyrdom in Zabia Street in
Bialystok."
