THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Arab 'willingness' to consider peace with Israel seen Washington (JTA) — Two Rea- gan Administration officials and a former Carter Administration Middle East expert agreed Tues- day that there is a willingness among the Arab countries to con- sider peace with Israel but as yet no commitment to negotiations to bring it about. Howard Teicher, the Middle East expert on the National Secu- rity Council; Richard Fairbanks, an ambassador-at-large who for- merly dealt with the autonomy talks; and Harold Saunders, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs under President. Carter also agreed that the only country the Middle East states look to help them achieve peace is the United States. Even as the United States is "vilified," country after country comes to the United States for as- sistance because they know "the U.S. will try to help them without screwing up their internal situa- tion," Teicher said. The three experts discussed "The Future of the Middle East Process: An American perspec- tive" at the biennial convention of B'nai B'rith International at the Sheraton Washington Hotel. Fairbanks said "There does seem a reality growing" in all of the disputes in the Middle East that neither rhetoric nor killing will solve the problems there but only "negotiations are the way to have effective long term strategic change for the better." But, he said, to bring negotiations about "take statesmen, and it takes brave statesmen. - Teicher contended that while there has been no change of atti- tude among the Arab states about Israel, although they have spent a great deal of time in recent years in discussing ways of bringing about peace with Israel. the coun- tries in the region must be con- vinced that it is in their interest to make peace and both Israel and the Arab countries, as well as the United States, must be willing to "take risks for peace," he said. Missouri voters pick Jews for top seats In what appears to be a first in American Jewish history, voters in Missouri's Democratic guber- natorial primary month nomi- nated Jews for the positions of both governor and lieutenant governor. The voters chose Kenneth J. Rothman, current lieutenant governor, and Harriet Woods, who currently holds a seat in the Missouri Senate. Rothman and Woods, nomi- nated for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, have both indicated that their Jewish back- grounds will not affect their cam- paigns. They continued to say that their nominations are proof that Mis- souri voters do not consider a can- didate's religion as a test for polit- ical office.
