Jewish legal society
supports college

New York (JTA) — A Jewish
legal aid society is supporting a
Jesuit university in Washington,
D.C. in its refusal to give "univer-
sity recognition" to two homosex-
ual student groups which contend
that such a refusal violates a local
human rights measure.
The suit before a lower court in
the District of Columbia, which
rejected the discrimination com-
plaint,_ and which is now before
the District of Columbia Court of
Appeals, is believed to be the first
of its kind, according to Dennis
Rapps, executive director of the
National Jewish Commission on
Law and Public Affairs (COLPA),
which filed a friend of the court
brief in support of the university's
position.
Rapps said the brief, though it
involved COLPA in a legal battle
in which neither contestant was -
Jewish, was nevertheless in con-
formity with the agency's com-
mitment to the principle that a
university is protected by the
First Amendment from any pres-
sure to endorse positions hostile to
the school's philosophy.

It's commonly said that Israel has one real resource —brains. But those
brains must be proper! , .:., :ducated in order tc be fruitful. And education
costs.

Mid-management
cost cuts hit
American Jews

West Palm Beach (JTA) A
West Palm Beach Jewish career
expert has concluded that Ameri-
can corporations are dropping
middle management positions to
cut costs and that many American
Jews are caught in the squeeze.
"For every computer engineer
who designs a microdot, there are
hundreds of jobs in packing and on
the assembly line but there are
increasingly fewer positiOns in
between where the educated mid-
dle class Jew has typically fit in
the past," according to Toby Cha-
bon, career and vocational guid-
ance specialist at the Jewish
Vocational Service (JVS) of Palm
Beach County.
Chabon also said that the result
is a large number of Jews who are
either unemployed or under-
employed in positions where they
do' not have the opportunity to use
their talents and are unable to
earn sufficient incomes.

Jewish journalism
contest announced

New York (JTA) — The fourth
annual competition for Simon
Rockower Memorial Awards in
Jewish journalism was an-
nounced by Robert Cohn,
president of the American Jewish
Press Association (AJPA), and
Esther Ritz, president of JWB.
They said the annual competi-
tion "has clearly demonstrated an
ever-increasing sense of responsi-
bility by the English-language
community press."
The fourth competition is based
on the Jewish year 5744 which
ends on Sept. 24. Frank Wundohl,
JWB communications director
and former AJPA president, is
administrator for the contest.
Deadline for entries is Dec. 1.
