The program was origi- nated by the local Jewish- American/Polish-American Dialogue under the joint sponsorship of the Ameri- can Jewish Committee; Jewish Community Coun- cil; Anti-Defamation League; Polish-American Congress; Ukrainian- American Coordinating Council, Metropolitan De- troit Branch and St. Mary's College of Orchard Lake. Detroiter Harold Gales, na- tional chairman of the Jewish-American / Pol- ish-American Dialogue, in- itiated the observance. The program will, once again, be taped in its entirety by technicians from Radio Free Europe and will be re-broadcast the fol- lowing evening from its transmitter facilities in Munich, West Germany, to all of the Eastern Bloc na- tions, as well as to the Democratic countries of the European continent. U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled July 23 that Birmingham's Nativ- ity scene violates the con- stitutional separation of church and state. The scene in dispute has • been an- nually displayed in front of city hall. Legal counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union had argued that by only displaying a Nativity scene, the city was endors- ing a religion. Meanwhile, Birmingham city officials had contended that the scene fell into the broad category of Christmas displays which had been approved by the U.S. Sup- reme Court.
