THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The un-kosher
chicken prices
Non-kosher frying chic-
kens are being advertised
for 48" to 59e per pound by
the supermarkets in the De-
troit area. Empire kosher
fryers sell for $1.68 per
pound — 3% times as much
as non-kosher.
Why should there be such
a big difference? I can
understand 25" per pound,
but so much more!?
I think it is a scandal that
Jewish people who want to
keep kosher are forced to
pay so much more! Can any-
thing be,,done about it?

`Bells of Peace'
was appreciated
May I congragulate the
committee in charge of the
Maccabi Youth Games pro-
gram. As senior citizens, we
were fortunate to hear the
"Bells of Peace" given in the
Federation Apartments on
Ten Mile. Also, we went to
hear them again at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch of the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
May God guide them and
bless them for giving us all
that pleasure.

Anthony Lewis
and paranoia
New York Times colum-
nist Anthony Lewis is unre-
lenting in his ardor to dis-
credit Israel., He charges
that it has "increasingly be-
come gripped not only by
zealotry but by paranoia."
He appears uncomprehen-
sive and unappreciative of
the mentality of a people
scarred by frightful losses in
five wars to annihilate them
— in another Holocaust.
"Paranoia?" — when Is-
rael makes an enormously
costly_ sacrifice by surren-
dering Sinai for peace —
only to be rewarded by a
treaty turned into a dubious
cotd peace by Egypt?
The Lewis "paranoia"
turns up criticism that the
"reality" is that Israel today
is no longer the vision of a
Jewish land of "pioneers
and poets, egalitarian and
tolerant." Jews in earliest
days never struggled harder
than settlers currently
turning barren rocky hill-
sides into habitable homes
in Judea and Samaria. The
vicious hostility of Arabs
has not changed. What Is-
raeli scientists and
engineers are accomplish-
ing represents the very es-
sence of "pioneering." As for
"poets," how much Israeli
literature has Mr. Lewis
read?
