Dr. Rackman will address
annual Bar-Ilan dinner at SZ

Prof. Emanuel Rackman,
president of Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity, will be guest
speaker at the university's
annual dinner 'to be held
Sept. 18 at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, announced Phillip
Stollman, honorary chair-
man of the global board of
trustees.
Samuel Hechtman will be
honored at this year's 30th
anniversary dinner. The
dinner marks the dedica-
tion of Bar-Ilan's Heroes
Road in honor of Hechtman.
The Heroes Road is a sys-
tem of ramps and other
facilities on campus that
will provide barrier-free ac-
cess to the dozens of Bar-
Ilan's students who are con-
fined to wheelchairs, or are
otherwise disabled, as a re-
sult of war-related injuries.
Dr. Rackman has served
as Bar-Ilan president since
1977, at which time he left
New York to take up full-
time residence in Ramat
Gan.
• He received his rabbinic
training at Yeshiva Uni-
versity, was graduated from
Columbia Law School, and
holds a doctorate in political
science from Columbia
University. He was rabbi of
the Fifth Avenue Syna-
gogue in New York City,
served as professor of
Jewish studies, and consul-
tant to the chancellor of the
City University of New
York on Jewish studies, and
as adjunct professor of

Dr. Rackman has been a
member of the board of gov-
ernors of the Jewish
Agency, past president of
the New York Board of
Rabbis and of the Rabbini-
cal Council of America, and
holds the rank of chaplain
(colonel) in the United
States Air Force Reserve.
Dr. Rackman is author of

Israel's Emerging Constitu-
tion, One Man's Judaism

and of many essays pub-
lished in Commentary,
Judaism and other schol-
arly journals. He also has a
column in the Jewish Week.

Detroiter dedicates laser lab

The laser chemistry lab-
oratory at Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity was recently dedicated
by Detroiter Martin R.
Goldman, announced
DOnald Fox and Paul
Zlotoff, general chairmen.
The work being done in
this laboratory is generally
called laser chemistry and
probes the fundamental na-
ture of the interaction of
matter and energy.
The basic research proj-
ects under way include;
molecular energy transfer
and laser-induced reac-
tions.
The following are the
major practical applications
of the research being pur-
sued in the Bar-Ilan labora-
tory; new laser systems,
synthesis of fine and novel
chemicals and isotope sep-
aration.
Goldman has been in-
volved with a number of
communal institutions and
organizations.

He participated in the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign's
major gifts committee and
. will soon dedicate a kinder-
garten in thaDetroit Project
Renewal town of Ramle.
He has been on the board
of Detroit Men's ORT and
has endowed scholarships
at the ORT School of

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah,
Hillel Day School and at the
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology. He also has
provided funds for
Lubavitch projects.
It the general commu-
nity, Goldman is on the de-
velopment committee of the
Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion, on the executive com-
mittee of Spaulding for
Children and on the execu-
tive committee of the Na-
tional Football League
alumni charities.

Through the Jewish Na-
tional Fund he will soon
dedicate a forest in Israel. A
member of the executive
committee of State of Israel
Bonds, Goldman is a Canal

include participating in
capital fund drives for the
Holocaust Memorial Center
and for Jewish residences
for the elderly and he has
endowed scholarship pro-
grams at Hebrew Univer-
sity, the Weizmann Insti-
tute of Science, at

Adult classes
in Southfield

Immigrants interested in
learning English or improv-
ing their English skills may
take Southfield Adult Edu-
cation classes Monday
through Friday beginning
Tuesday. Day and evening
classes will be open, and
citizenship classes will also
be available.
Adults may also obtain a
high school diploma
through High School Com-
pletion or GED classes.
There is no charge for the
classes and information is
available from Southfield
Adult Education, 356-8640.
