tides not to send hie "signal

makes any difference at all.
For those living in Wash-
ington, the one newspaper
whose influence is all per-
vasive is the Washington
Post. This was borne out in a
recent study which showed
that opinion makers on the
average devote 31 minutes
each day to the Post, 12
minutes to The New York
Times and 11 minutes to the
Wall Street Journal. Unfor-
tunately, detailed analyses
also reveal that the' Post,
among all . major dailies in
the nation, is slanted the
most against Israel in its
news coverage and edito-
rially. The Post has been so
outrageously unfair and
biased that an organization
has been established — the
Committee for Accuracy;in
Middle East Reporting in
America (CAMERA) — to
monitor the paper. This
organization publishes a
monthly newsletter, Post .
Mortems detailing the
Post's deficiencies in treat-
ing' Israel fairly.
Ironically, some of the
major culprits in the ranks
of its correspondents and
editorial writers have
Jewish backgrounds. On
closer look, this is not sur-
prising because of the ten-
dency of some American
Jews in the media to bend
over backwards to demon
strate to their journalistic 7
colleagues and readers that
because of their Jewishness
they are not being pro-
Israel. The result was dis-
tressingly apparent in the
Post's coverage of Lebanon •
and more recently in report-
ing on the Israeli elections,
which it asserted in an
editorial demonstrated that
Isreal was becoming "anti-
democratic."
Since there is scant pros-
pect of a second major daily
appearing in the- Washing-
ton area, we will have to
continue to read it and
wince — and try to point out
its more egregious, be-
havior,
