Doctors research effects
of Chlamydia Trachomatis

Beersheva — Although
considered the smallest bac-
terium in the world,
Chlamydia trachomatis
(CT) is the cause of big
health problems. Sexually
transmitted chlamNial in-
fections constitute a
worldwide epidemic, with
an estimated 3 million cases
each year in the United
States alone according to
researchers at Ben-Gurion
University.
Chlamydia tends to be-
come a chronic infection and
infants born to infected
mothers are likely to con-
tract conjunctivitis (eye in-
fection) and sometimes,
pneumonia, through expo-
sure during passage
through the birth canal.
Chlamydial infections are
the cause of a non-
gonococcal urethritis, as
well as epididymitis, cer-
vicitis, endometritis and
PID - Pelvic Inflamatory
Disease, which may, in
turn, cause mechanical in-
fertility by fallopian tube
obstruction.
Likewise, chlamydial in-
fections are known to be the
cause of trachoma, the eye
disease which has afflicted
400 million people
worldwide and is the lead-
ing cause of blindness in de-
veloping countries. A link
has recently been found be-
tween chlamydia and cervi-
cal cancer.
In a joint research project
between Prof. Israel Sarov,
of Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev, and a team of
doctors headed by Prof.
Vacslaw Insler of the gyne-

Fall festival
in W. Bloomfield

The fourth annual West
Bloomfield Fall Festival
will be held Sept. 7-9 at
Henry Ford Hospital , West
Maple Road, just west of
Drake Road.
The festival will feature
carnival rides, an arts and
crafts show and many other
displays, and a large selec-
tion of food. Entertainment
will include many music
and dance groups, a mime
troupe, a dunk tank, fire de-
partment water fights, an
apple-pie-baking contest
and a rotten sneaker con-
test.
For information, call the
hospital, 661-5540.

.

cology unit of Soroka Medi-
cal Center, chlamydial in-
fections were associated
with two-thirds of the cases
termed mechanical infertil-
ity.
This severe complication
can be prevented through
early detection of the
chlamydia infection in
women and, immediate
antibiotic treatment, thus
avoiding ireversible dam-
age.
Because most women 'do
not have any recollection of
having the disease or of
being exposed to it, early
diagnostic testing and pre-
ventive treatment, for both
partners, is vital so as to
prevent recurrent infection.

Commuter rail
service planned
for Tel Aviv •

Tel Aviv (JTA) —The Tel
Aviv municipality has
adopted in principle a plan
for a suburban commuter
rail service linking, in the
first stage, the center of Tel
Aviv with the town of
Petach Tikva to the north-
east.
The first stage of the plan,
drawn up by the Israel In-
stitute for Transportation
Research, calls for construc-
tion of a 16-kilometer line
between Tel Aviv and
Petach Tikva, to be served
by eight-car trains running
at two-minute intervals.
Cost of the first stage is es-
timated at $65 million.

Sells, Channel 2 news an-
chorman.
In conjunction with the
telethon, MDA will host a
family fair, called "Fun Fest
'84," on Monday, from 11
a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held
in the parking lot of the
Sheraton Southfield Hotel,
'across the street from the
WJBK-TV studios where
the telethon will be telecast.
In the Detroit area, MDA
research projects are being
conducted at Wayne State
University and the Univer-
sity of Michigan. Local
clinics are located' at Chil-
dren's Hospital of Michigan
in Detroit and Oakland
General Hospital in Madi-
son Heights.
