Linking Jews,
aim of service
BY HEIDI PRESS
Local News Editor
Barry Simon says the
most unusual address he
has listed in his pen pal
service is that of Jewtown,
Cochin, Kerala State, India,
and belongs to a member of
the Bene Israel (East Indian
Jews).
Simon is the founder and
operator of International
Jewish Correspondence, a
pen pal service he started in
1978.
Housed in the offices of
the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress, the IJC has about
5,000 members, from age 5
to 80.
The Montreal-based
Simon was in Detroit last
week to gather names and
addresses for his club. There
are no dues or fees, and
members are responsible for
their own postage. The CJC
gives him office space in
which to operate.
The 41-year-old, ninth
grade math teacher is on a
promotional tour to large
and small Jewish com-
munities "letting people
know about the service so
they can participate. The
more people who partici-
pate, the better the service
becomes," he said.
Simon's service is limited
to Jews. "It is the only at-
tempt like this to link Dias-
pora Jewry to itself, so to
speak," he said.
Most of the correspon-
dents write in English, but
some write in other lan-
guages. Writrs from more
than 20 countries partici-
pate, with the largest
number coming from
Canada, Israel, the U.S. and
the Soviet Union. Included
among the addresses he has
compiled are newspapers,
synagogues and Jewish
community centers.
To participate in the pen
pal service, a registration
form must be completed.
When the form is returned
to Simon, he sends the
names and addresses of at
least two persons from
countries the registrant has
requested on the form.
What are his goals for the
project? "I'd like more ad-
dresses from both Western
and Eastern Europe."
Ultimately, he would like
his service to become a proj-
ect of the World Jewish
Congress since it is interna-
tional in scope.

tional Jewish Corre-
