Bar mitzvah
shares his rite

Daniel Slaim, son of Joyce
and Dr. Abe Slaim will
share his bar mitzvah with
Andrei Shagal of the Soviet
Union at Shabbat services
Saturday. Andrei is the son
of Dmitry and Anna Shagal.
During the course of the
service, the congregation
will be encouraged to send
words of greeting and
encouragement to the
Shagals, even though they
are not able to celebrate
publicly at this time.

Twinned rite
at Adat Shalom

Cheryl Lerchin will twin
the observance of her .bat
mitzvah celebraton Satur-
day at Adat Shalom
Synagogue with Sopie Vig-
darov, the daughter of Grig-
ory and Marina Vigdarov of
Moscow, USSR.
After serving in the
Soviet army, Vigdarov
studied economics for three
years. When he and his fam-
ily and parents decided to
emigrate Vigdarov discon-
tinued his studies so that a
university degree would not
become an obstacle to their
emigration. His parents
were given exist visas soon
after their application in
March 1973, and Vigdarov
was told that he and his
family would be allowed to
follow soon provided he left
his place of work.
He gave up his employ-
ment as a pressmaker in a
small button factory.
Nevertheless, seven years
later the Vigdarov family
has repeatedly been refused
permission to j6in Vig-
darov's parents in Israel.
The reasons given are Vig-
darov's army service, com-
pleted in 1969, and the fact
that his father-in-law is
withholding his permission.-
Marina's father abandoned
his family 16 years ago.
Vigdarov has been able to
find various odd jobs, but it
is difficult for his family to
subsist on his meager earn-
ings. He spent two months
in a hospital after injuring
his back chopping wood. His
elderly parents are Uving
for the day when they will
be reunited with their chil-
dren and grandchildren in
srah el
e has written sev-
Cheryl
ral times to Sofie but has
eceived no replies. They
ill attempt to contact the
amily by telephone and
ill send greetings to their
elatives in Israel.
