oldberg, who will attend Creighton University on a basketball scholarship this fall,

family put up a four-foot basketball
hoop in the basement. Goldberg
began shooting jump shots and learn-
ing the footwork so vital to making a
lay-up.
As he got older, he improved his
skills at his "second home," the
Jewish Community Center, where he
often played three-on-three games
against older guys.
All along, Goldberg was aided by
his parents. "Our whole life is our
children," Fred Goldberg says. "We
don't push our kids, we pull them in
the right direction. If they had
wanted to walk in the woods to chase
butterflies and collect leaves, Fran
and I would have been there with
them. The main advice I gave them
was to be prepared before they under-
took anything."
An important question arises.
Which sport does Goldberg like best?
The answer: Whichever one he hap-
pens to be playing at the time.
More importantly, which sport is
he best at? "I don't have pro basket-
ball potential," Goldberg says, "and
I'm not a pro baseball prospect yet.
But I had some college baseball
scholarship offers and I was invited
to the Cincinnati Red's pre-draft
camp. I plan to play both sports at
Creighton until I'm forced to make a
decision."
This summer, Goldberg is play-
ing on a sandlot baseball team four
times a week, and hitting the basket-
ball court twice a week at the highly
competitive St. Cecilia gym in De-
troit and once a week at the equally
competitive and prestigious Sandy
Sanders League in Ann Arbor.
