S.4 ,1 A GREAT SHOW OF af- fection, dedication and loy- alty . . . was the pre- reopening last week by Rialto Cafe on Woodward just south of Nine Mile Rd. . . . held evening prior to public welcome by so many more. This was a wonderful tribute to owners Charlie and Frank Pappas, whose July 3 tragic incident at the restaurant ... which could have happened anywhere at anytime . . . had the eatery closed about six weeks .. . The employees didn't go out looking for other jobs . . . waiting for Rialto to open again . . . waitresses, bus- boys and chefs . . . all of whom could have gotten work elsewhere . . . Just about everyone returned . . . in a show of loyalty and af- fection that cannot be bought. Rialto Restaurant is the same as before . . . a good family dining spot that serves quality food at low prices . . . and so many people call "our home away from home" . . . But the "new start" that Charlie and Frank so richly deserve got off to a tremendous bang as its quietly-prepared pre- opening party was pre- sented with much class .. . amidst new carpeting, new aluminum doors, new counter, new wallpaper, new glass case, five new booths, new waitress is- lands, etc. Television cameras from three major stations (Chan- nels 7, 4 and 2) took in the proceedings to show that evening over their air- waves. Hors d'oeuvres were passed by the waitresses, happy to return "home" .. . as dignitaries galore ming- led with Rialto friends .. . over 100 . . . to welcome back this neighborhood res- taurant which has become such a favorite eating and watering spot ... Ferndale mayor, police chief, council members, judges, etc., attended. Never anything like this since Rialto was originally founded in 1926 by Alex Kelingos and Basil Theson . . . On Oct. 20, 1977, the city of Ferndale conferred a resolution to Charlie and Frank on the restaurant's 50th birthday . . . Now, Aug. 17, 1984, another reso- lution cae from Ferndale city hall . . . "When a special event will be held that will reinforce the high esteem" . . . to Charlie and Frank for the great regard that Rialto is, held in the community... Others share in this feeling for these two brothers and their restaurant. U.S. Congressman San- der Levin took over the floor as master of ceremonies for his good friend, Charlie Pappas . . . stating that it \ N .41. 41% r, would be a brief ceremony and mentioning the person- ages present . . . To Sate Sen. Jack Faxon, Sandy jok- ingly remarked, "The rea- son I didn't mention you, Jack, was because you're not always brief' . . . This time he was, though .. , Then a phone call came from anothr friend of Char- lie's, Gov. James Blanchard in the Upper Peninsula .. . with Congressman Levin taking the phone call and narrating Gov. Blanchard's message to the throng . . . It was supposed to be a brief ceremony, but Sandy kept it going with, "The steaks aren't ready yet." Great to sit in the same area I have made somewhat of a ritual on most Friday evenings . . . Only dif- ference was no fresh turkey . . . A lot of choice sirloin steaks were served . . . I had delicious Orange Roughy fish and a splendid double- baked potato . . . Also Greek salad and marinated oc- topus . . . Assorted pastries, Greek and French, were brought in from Greektown . . . and Frank's wife, Peggy, made wonderful Cataefe, shredded dough used to make baklava, stuffed with walnuts, almonds, honey and spices. So many people saying, "We love you" to Charlie and Frank . . . as a plant from Gov. Blanchard and wife Paula sits on the new cashier case . . . and so many wishing them the very best. You can't miss Rialto now . . . Outside is a new red awning . . . and as dusk sets in, rows of running lights flash around it. This was a dignified party . . . and with more space, Charlie and Frank would have probably invited everybody who ever came into Rialto restaurant . . . that's the kind of guys they are . . . gradious, humble and grateful. The high quality of food and good service coupled with its low price reputa- tion, are a combination hard to beat ... but there is one better at Rialto Restaurant . . . the friendship of Charlie and Frank Pappas. IT'S NOT UNCOM- MON to see a duck or two waddling around . . . or per- haps squirrel hoarding nuts for a long winter ahead .. . This is the atrium area of Truffles Restaurant, Hag- gerty Road, corner of Pon- tiac Trail, which opened June 1982 . . . and has ac- quired a fine reputation for its food and service in a very intimate, cozy atmosphere.
