Hope for `Hatikvah'
For almost a century,
Hatikvah, a spirited and
patriotic hymn composed by
Naphtali Herz Imber, has
been recognized as the na-
tional anthem of the Jewish
people. Perhaps the mo-
ment of its universal ac-
ceptance as such came at
the Seventh Zionist Con-
gress, held in Basle in 1905,
when all the delegates rose
in tumultuous unison, to
sing it, as their song.
Throughout the period of
the British Mandate, it was
the unofficial anthem of
Jewish Palestine. At the
declaration of the State of
Israel, on May 14, 1948, it
was sung by the assembly at
the opening of the cere-
mony, and at its conclusion,
it was played by members of
the Palestine Symphony
Orchestra. However, it had
never been given official
status as the national an-
them of the State of Israel
by tlie Knesset.
Recently, a Likud
member of the Knesset,
Pinchas Goldstein, decided
that after 36 years of state-
hood, it was time for the de
facto national anthem to be
recognized as such. But this
was the wrong time to bring
up such an issue. The Knes-
set is so divided, so splin-
tered, so filled with re-
crimination and distrust
that Hatikvah lost by a
margin of 25 to' 12!
The main reason for the
defeat of Hatikvah was that
the bill to salute the time-
honored hymn was intro-
duced by a member of
Likud. So naturally, all
members of the Labor party
voted against it. Arab and
Communist members of the
Knesset opposed the bill be-
cause Hatikvah seems to be
one sided: it makes refer-
ence to the Jewish soul and
the longing for a Jewish
homeland, but it says noth-
ing about Arabs and other
minorities who live in Is-
rael. In a word, Hatikvah is
too Jewish for the State of
Israel!
Typically, most of the
members of the Knesset
didn't even show up for the
vote. Of 120,, only 37 were
present — and most, of the
Likud members, who did
not appear to encourage the
passage of the bill, ex-
- plained that they "never
imagined that any member
