What to look
for in quality
day care

There are three areas to
look at when you visit a
child care program: the re-
lationship between the
child care provider and the
children; the program; and
the physical aspects, includ-
ing ,health, nutrition and
safety.
In the relationship area,
it is essential that you feel
happy and confident about
the provider. You want to
consider:
• Does the provider have
previous experience or
training in working with
children?
• Are children allowed to
make choices?
• Does the provider use a
positive reinforcement ap-
proach when disciplining
and guiding children?
• Are children encouraged
to resolve conflicts between
themselves in an acceptable
manner?
Find out what type of pro-
gram is followed. Is there a
daily schedule? Does the
daily schedule include ex-
periences you consider im-
portant? Some aspects of the
center/home you may want
to look at include:
• Are there routines and
rules the children can
understand and follow?
• Is there time to play
alone and also to interact
with friends?
• Is there an educational
program and philosophy'?
• Is there enough staff to
give individual attention'?
Look around the center/
home to make sure it is a
safe, healthy environment
and that appropriate physi-
cal space exists. Be sure to
look for and ask about:
• Is there an up-to-date
license or registration?
• Is the facility attractive,
clean and well lit with
safety in mind?
• Is there enough equip-
ment and materials?
• What happens if a child
becomes ill or hurt while in
care?
