Here, on the campus of the Givat Haviva Center for Advanced Studies, sur- rounded by kibbutzim and Arab villages, young, trained adult guides lead mixed groups of Arab and Jewish teenagers along the path to discovery about each other. Givat Haviva workshops for Jewish and Arab youth began in October 1983, ac- cording to Froike Oren, who leads the workshop pro- gram. In less than a year, Oren, who has a degree in Middle Eastern history, said the workshops have brought to- gether, in groups of 20, more than 500 young Israeli Jews and Arabs for four-day periods during which they share a classroom, dining room, dormitories and rec- reational facilities. The site for the work- shops is the Givat Haviva Educational Center, located in the Sharon valley about ten miles from the Mediter- ranean, midway between Haifa and Tel Aviv. It is situated in Israel's "triangle," an area with a heavy concentration of Is- rael's 700,000 Arabs — and close to the West Bank where some 800,000 Arabs live. The center was founded by Hashomer Hatzair, the 71-year-old Socialist Zionist movement, and its Kibbutz Artzi Federation, which re- presents 83 of Israel's 230 kibbutzim. Israeli lights used on Andrea Doria expedition Tel Aviv (JTA) — Soggi e r dollar bills and Italian cur- rency recovered from the 25-year-old wreck of the Itla- lian luxury liner Andrea Doria off the U.S. coast litst week were found with the help of special lights made in Jerusalem. According to expedition leader Peter Gimbel, 15, high-intensity, specially- built, underwater lights made by Birns Oceonog- raphics (Israel) Ltd. at their factory in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul quarter, were used during the salvage op- eration. Similar Birns under- water lights have been used in many major film prod- uctions, including Raise the Titanic, An Officer and a Gentlemen and several James Bond movies.
