The Holocaust Memorial
Center, slated to open Sept.
16 on the grounds of the
Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield, is seek-
ing Yizkor (memorial)
books and other Holocaust
artifacts and literature
from survivors living in the
Detroit area, according to
Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig,
the center's director.
During the Holocaust,
some 4,500 European
Jewish communities were
destroyed; their history and
culture all but lost to the
world. Reconstructing that
history and restoring that
culture are major goals of
the Holocaust Memorial
Center.
The West Bloomfield
facility is believed to be the
first exclusively designed
center of its kind in North
America and is intended to
be more thanjust a memo-
rial to the six million Jews
killed in the Holocaust.
Through its Morris and
Emma Schaver Library and
Archives, and related de-
partments, the HMC will be
a national resource for the
study of the Holocaust,
World War II, anti-
Semitism, and Jewish-
Christian relations.
Rabbi Rosenzveig has in-
itiated discussions with the
West German government
about conducting an inter-
national symposium at the
HMC to study Jewish-
German relations before
and after the Holocaust.
Other major educational
programs are in the plan-
ning stages, including a
project to document the his-
tory and culture of Hunga-
rian Jewry, about which lit-
tle information is available.
In addition, a world-wide
search is under way to find
any materials relating to
the. Holocaust, Jewish and
anti-fascist resistance,
Nazis, anti-Semitism, war
crimes, Jewish-Christian
relations, and histories of
Jewish communities.
The center's library and
archives has already re-
ceived strong support with
the donation of more than
600 volumes from 'the per-
sonal library of The Jewish
News' editor emeritus;
Philip Slomovitz. Official
copies of transcripts from
trials of Nazi war criminals
in Germany and other
European countries are
being sent to the HMC. An
oral history collection,
featuring interviews with
survivors, is currently
being recorded.
