Minister Slilomo Hillel as
its candidate for Knesset
speaker.
The committee rejected a
proposal by the Alignment
to immediately elect a
speaker. But Alignment
leaders said that although
they had lost the battle,
they would win the war.
Eban was elected with the
backing of the Alignment
and Shas.

UN satellite
communications
begin in Sept.
United Nationi (JTA) —
Secretary. General Javier
Perez de Cuellar signed a
five-year agreement last
week with the International
Telecommunications Satel-
lite Organization (INTEL-
SAT) providing satellite
communication for UN
peacekeeping and emer-
gency relief actvities
around the world. The
agreement will go into ef-
fect Sept. 8.
As a result of the agree-
ment, the UN will have at
its disposal reliable satellite
communications facilities
linking all-of its present
peacekeeping activities. For
that purpose, the UN earth
stations in Jerusalem,
Naqoura in Lebanon and
Geneva, have been adapted
to meet the INTELSAT
technical requirements.
According to Richard Col-
ino, director general of IN-
TELSAT, the satellite sys-
tem will provide the UN
peacekeeping forces with
"insant reliable communi-
cations." He said that the
service would cost the UU
$200,000 a year.

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Knesset placements com-
mittee Monday elected
labor MK Abba Eban as
temporary speaker until a
permanent speaker is
elected. Eban was elected on
the basis of being the eldest
Knesset member, after
Yosef Burg.
The vote took place after
Attorney General Yitzhak
Zamir and Knesset legal
advisers ruled that Burg's
position as interior minister
and as speaker represented

New York — East-West
relations, the situation in
the Middle East and the
position of Jews in Eastern
Europe, were among the
subjects discussed at a
meeting between Romanian
President Nicolae
Ceausescu and World
Jewish Congress President
Edgar M. Bronfman, held
earlier this month at
Ceausescu's seaside villa,
the WJC report-eil here.
Crime in Israel
on the upswing
Jerusalem (JTA) — Vio-
lent crime in Israel is con-
tinuing to increase, accor-
ing to police files. During
the first six months of this
year, police had recorded
127,005 reported crimes, an
increase of 8.8 percent com-
pared to the same period
last year.
There were '120 rape
cases, compared to 113 last
year; 239 robberies, com-
pared to 236 in 1983; and
802 arson cases, compared
to 693 last year. There were
133 murders this year com-
pared to 114 1st year.
Twenty-one percent of the
crimes occurred in the cen-
tral region, the area be-
tween Haifa and Jerusalem.
"I conveyed to President
Ceausescu our sense of
satisfaction at the forceful
and authoritative manner
in which he had acted to
halt an outbreak of anti-
Semitism in the country a
few months ago," Bronfman
said upon emerging from
the meeting. Earlier this
year the Jewish community
in Romania was shaken by
the appearance of anti-
Semitic publications which
included attacks upon the
community's chief rabbi,
Moses Rosen.
Bronfman told Ceausescu
that positive movement on
the Soviet Jewry question
could help facilitate the eas-
ing of East-West relations.
Both agreed that the pre-
sent political atmosphere
between East and West was
unhealthy and such a rela-
xation of tensions was
highly desirable.
