In a related development, Boleslays Maikovskis has been ordered deported from the United States for hav- ing concealed his past ac- tivities as a police official in Nazi-ocCupied Latvia dur- ing World War II when he applied for entry into the U.S in 1951. The order, issued by the five-member Board of Im- migration Appeals, re- verses a decision in July 1983, by a Federal Immi- gration Judge in New York who ruled that the 80- year-old residen of Mineola, Long Island, was "not de- portable," because Maikovskis' past conduct did not rise to the "level of depravity" needed to make his alleged crimes "contrary to human decency." Maikovskis can appeal the Immigration Board's decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the,Second Cir- cuit and finally to the United States Supreme Court. It was not known whether he would make such an appeal. Should the final verdict of the legal process be deporta- tion, Maikovskis could be sent back to his country of origin, Latvia, now under the rule of the Soviet Union, which had convicted him in absentia in 1965 of war crimes and sentenced him to death. • . Maikovskis' home in Mineola was firebombed by unidentified assailants in September 1981. The home was slightly damaged. In August 1978, the alleged war criminal was shot in his home by unidentified as- sailants. The American Jewish Committee commended the Board of. Immigration Ap- peals for ordering the depor- tation of Maikovskis. South. African oil supplied by Arab states, study says 851-4334 Gerald Brolda New York (JTA) — The 87-year-old dentist, Charles Kremer, who has been in- volved in the efforts to have Archbishop Valerian Trifa deported from the United States for his wartime ac- tivities -as a leader in the Romanian Iron Guard, said that he was "deeply shocked and disappointed" that Trifa has been allowed to gain legal entry into Por- tugal. Trifa, who is held respon- sible with the deaths of thousands of Jews and other citizens in wartime Romania, left the U.S. last week under the escort of Justice .Depitrtment offi- cials. He had been stripped of his U.S. citizenship for having concealed his part in these activities when he entered the U.S. in 1950. Kremer was born in the village of Braila, Romania, in July 1897. He studied medicine in Romania until he says an increase in anti- Semitism caused him to leave his homeland. He was a stowaway on board a boat to Port Said, Egypt, and eventually made his way to New York, where he finished his medical train- ing and was a dentist in New York until just re- cently. Meanwhile, Portuguese officials said that they have not received any request from any country fpr the ex- tradition of Trifa. The officials said "Por- tugal will apply the law," but added that for the time being there are no legal obs- tacles for Trifa's stay there. Portuguese officials said they were unaware of Tri- fa's Iron Guard activities when they agreed to let him enter, but that they will in- vestigate his past. Since entering Portugal, Trifa has dehied any involvement in the pogroms. Romanian Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen said that Romanian Jews are "deeply grateful to the American government for having at long last exposed Trifa's past and expelled him."
