Under the headings "Hebrew Words Get Rules: Knotty
Spelling Untangled," *Detroit News story was:
The Jewish Press Association (JPA) believes
it has partially solved the long-standing problem
of spelling Hebrew terms and names of Jewish
festivals in English.
It has developed a new list of the terms, using
phonetic spelling according to the pronunciation
used in Israel.
Working on this long-time project was Philip
Slomovitz, editor of the Detroit Jewish News. It was
Slomovitz who first appointed•L.H. Frisch, editor
of the American Jewish World in Minneapoliis, to
head a committee in 1950 to draw up the changes.
The results of that initial study were adopted
recently in Washington at a JPA convention.
"Reaction to the new version has been excep-
tionally good, because of the unusual amount of
confusion in the past," said Slomovitz. Even Jews
have been confused."
Begun in 1950, the project lagged until-it was
brought up again at thO 1956 JPA annual meeting,
but no agreement was reached. One of the obsta-
cles was an early decision to adhere to-the spelling
used in scholarly works. This was later dropped.
In 1965 the project came up again with
Slomovitz, Frisch and Albert W. Bloom, editor of
the Pittsburgh Chronicle, working on the new ver-
sion.
Throughout the years, said Slomovitz, the
JPA has consulted with 15 national Jewish
groups and heads of Jewish seminaries and uni-
vergitiisin the effort to standardize spellings.
As an increasing number of Jewish terms and
names were used in the general news media,
rather than being confined to Jewish circles, the
need grew for one version of spelling. Some words
have taken as many as 15 different forms.
The new spellings include: Rosh Hashanah,
Yom Kippur, Succot, Hoshanah Rabah, Shmini
Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Chamisha
Asar b'Shvat, Purim, Pesach, Lag b'Omer,
Shavuot and Tisha b'Av.
This version will be sent to publishers of dic-
tionaries, public relations firms, advertising
agencies and editorial association's.
. "Our basic terms have been covered with this
list," said Slomovitz. "The next chapter will have
to be directed at the Jewish community.
Because the abiisive in transliterations is still suf-
fered, a reminder of the Frisch contribution toward resolv-
ing the problem is timely in the course of paying honor to
the 'name of a pioneer in the American English-Jewish
presii.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
cost of living index rose by
12.4 percent during July,
_the highest ever rate for
July since the establish-
ment of the State and twice
the rise in July, 1983.
The increase during June
was 13.3 percent, but the
slight reduction in July does
not herald a decline in the
rate of inflation as July is
traditionally a lower rate of
increase month than June,
the Central Bureau of
Statistics noted.
Since• January, the index
has risen by 150 percent,
and by 354 percent during
the past 12 months. At the
present monthly average
increase of about 14 per-
cent, inflation during 1984
