Publisher Alfred Knopf dies at 91
Alfred Knopf, publisher
of the most important
classics by the world's most
prominent 'authors, died
Aug. 11 at age 91.
Among the most 'impor-
tant works in his catalogued
publications were the
widely acclaimed works by
Maurice Samuel, including
"The World of Peretz" and
"The World of Sholom
Aleichem."
There were disputes over
his hesitancy to produce
Jewish literary titles, de-
spite his admitted Jewish-
ness, but he had been
quoted to state that he felt
an obligation to recognize
the genius of Maurice
Samuel.
Since the founding of his
firm in 1915, Mr. Knopf
Rabbi Louis Rabinowitz dies
Jerusalem (JTA) — Rabbi
Louis Rabinowitz, former
chief rabbi of the Orange
Free State in South Africa
and more recently a Herut
deputy mayor of Jerusalem,
has died in Jerusalem at age
78.
Rabbi Rabinowitz made
his mark on Jerusalem as a
man of many talents. As a
scholar, he was a senior
editor of the Encyclopedia
Judaica; as a writer, he con-
tributed articles to many
publications, including the
popular weekly column
"Torah and Flora" in The
Jerusalem Post; as a man of
public affairs, he was both a
politician and an inveterate
fighter for causes contribut-
ing to a better quality of life;
and as a personality, he was
recognized throughout the
city:
His rabbinical career
began in Britain in the
1930s where he made a
name for himself as a pow-
erful pulpit orator and im-
pressive talmudic scholar.
During World War II he
served as senior chaplain
with the British forces in
the Middle East and in
Normandy.
After the war he took up
the South African appoint-
ment, serving simultane-
ously as professor of Hebrew
at Witwatersrand Univer-
sity.

French Legion of Honor and
was awarded the Military
Cross and a number of
British and Allied medals

any interest in the family
bank or other family finan-

famous Bordeaux wine
