rakhan because I know what comfort this gives to
every racist in America.
The greatest achievement of the Kennedy and
Johnson years was probably not the civil rights
legislation that was passed, but the fact that these
two presidents and those around them made it
unfashionable to be a bigot. With racism and bla-
tant class discriminations back in vogue, a lot of
Americans would feel guilty about being a part of
it were it not. for the doses of Farrakhan given to
them by the press.
"Don't be ashamed of white racism; blacks
are just as bigoted as you are!" That is the media's
message every time it massages Farrakhan's ego
to the point his tongue goes crazy.
Even the description of those Jews who came to hear
Farrakhan as "masochistic" is commendable judgment. It
is an indirect bit of additional advice to those who panic not
to be so quick to sensationalize those who needle them, to
front-page the haters in newspaper articles, to be partners
in sensationalizing un-American and inhuman indecen-
cies.
Theodore White and Carl Rowan showed more courage
than most of their contemporaries. They offered lesson for
courageous actions. May they be emulated to the extreme.

VPS PET SERVICES

To board a pet for a week would cost $49.50 — $5/day
boarding fee, $5 dip fee (parasite protection) and a $9.50
driving fee ($4.75 driving fee each way), plus free parking.
It's a good deal when you consider a week's parking costs at
least $25 at the airport. And how convenient to leave your
pet just seven minutes from the airport. Cats are also
boarded in a separate building.

Teacher questions bias
lawsuit at Cranbrook

Staff Report

A Jewish teacher in the
Cranbrook Educational
Community has cast doubts
on the allegations of a
former Cranbrook employee•
that the prestigious schools
in Bloomfield Hills employ
a "secret" admissions policy
that discriminates against
Jewish students.
"As far as my work here, I
haven't sensed any dis-
crimination from either the
students or the administra-
tion," Howard Berkowitz
said referring to the lawsuit
filed by Judith Stefanac in
Oakland County Circuit
Court last week. In the suit,
Stefanac, who was person-
nel director at Cranbrook
from September 1981
throukh NoVember of last
year, alleges that the school
marked certain applica-
tions with colox-coded sym-
bols resembling bagels.
"If there was one (bagel),
it indicated the applicant
had one Jewish parent. If
there were two, that meant
there were two Jewish par-
ents," according to
Stefanac's attorney, Ed-
ward Bell.
Berkowitz, who teaches
at the Cranbrook School for
Boys, doesn't totally dis-
count the validity of
Stefanac's claim, but feels
she may be basingAt partly
on misinformation as to the
school's current admissions
policy. "At one time, Cran-
brook, did employ a quota
;system," the teacher.. said,
"but that was before both
my. time- and Stefanac's."

teacher at the Cranbrook
School for Boys, about 30
percent of the school's 500 .
students are Jewish, he
said.
In addition to the boys
school, the Cranbrook Edu-
cational Community in-
cludes the Kingswood
School for Girls and the
Brookside elementary and
Middle Schools, which are
co-educational. Some 1,400
students are enrolled at
Cranbrook, with abot one-
third of that total estimated
to be Jewish, 'according to
Dr Lillian Bauder, acting
president of Cranbrook.
Dr. Bauder, defending the
schools' record in hiring and
admitting minorities, said
the schools "actively search
to create a diverse student
body," but do not keep re-
cords according to religion.
The Stefanac suit, which
has been assigned to Judge
Robert Anderson, claims
that Cranbrook officials
wrongfully dismissed her
when it was learned that
she "discovered" the
"secret" admissions policy.
The suit also alleges that
Stefanac, a Farmington
Hills resident, was subject
to sexual harassment by
membrs of the Cranbrook
- board of directors. The suit
seeks $10,000 in damages
for lost wages, benefits and
mental distress.
The Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith has
launched, an investigation
into the matter, according
to Dick Lobenthal, ,ADL
Michigan Region executive
director.
