New prospects social set
by Bar-Ilan U. Friends

A summer-time social is
being planned for individu-
als who are not yet involved
in Bar-Ilan University's De-
troit activities. The pool-
side gathering, to be hosted
at 7 p.m. Thursday by Dr.
and Mrs. Lawrence Loe-
wenthal, is by invitation
only. Lawrence Jackier will
be the eyening's speaker.
Jackier has been involved
with Bar-Ilan's activities
for many years. Along with
his wife, Shelly, and Nor-
man and Susan Pappas he
led a United Jewish Appeal
mission on a visit to campus
in 1981; he currently serves
on the executive committee
of the Detroit Frierids of
Bar-Han.
Jackier has held impor-
tant poiitions with the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, as well as with
regional and national UJA.
He is a past chairman of the
National Young Leadership
Cabinet. In addition, Jac-
kier has been instrumental
in the work of the Holocaust
Memorial Center, the De-
troit Committee for Soviet
Jewry, and the struggle to
Bev* the Jews of Ethiopia,
as well as Hillel Day School.
The' event for 'new pros-
pects is part of Bar-Ilan's ac-
tivities that will culminate
in the university's annual

The dinner will mark the
opening of Bar-Ilan's 30th
academic year. Samuel
Hechtman is the honoree,
"in recognition of his sup-
port and friendship" actu-
ally beginning before the
university's founding. The
dinner will also mark the
dedication of the Hechtman
Heroes Road, a system of
ramps and other facilities
that will provide barrier-
free access to the dozens of
Bar-Ilan students restricted
to wheelchairs as a result of
war-related injuries.
