About the life of Rabbi Yakov Josef Herman 478-5272 31562 GRAND RIVER (Orchard Lk. & Gr. River) in the Plaza of Farmington cause, Portuguese officials claimed, there was no indi- cation that he was a war criminal or that the United States had ordered him de- ported. ,Neal Sher, director of the OSI, said the OSI presently has 35 cases in litigation and is investigating some 300 others. The 70-year-old Trifa entered the United States in July 17, 1950, and was naturaliied on May 13, 1957. In May 1975, theU.S. began . denaturalization proceedings against him in Detroit. But in September 1980, on the eve of trial he surrendered his certificate of naturalization. The OSI then instituted deportation proceedings. The trial began on Oct. 4, 1982, but after three days of testimony establishing Tri- fa'•role in the anti-Semitic persecution of Romanian Jews by the Iron Guard, Trifa agreed to deportation. Sher explained that in an agreement with him Trifa was given two years to find a country to go to and if he could not do so by October 1984, he would be deported to Romania. Page 1 from the United States in October 1982 for his war- time crimes, left the U.S. Monday for Portugal. Stephen Trott, assistant at- torney general in the Jus- tice Department's criminal division, said, in announc- ing Trifa's departure from the U.S., that the archbi- ship will not be allowed to re-enter the country. Trott noted that Trifa's \ departure ended nine years of legal efforts by the OSI to first strip Trifa of his citi- zenship because he entered the U.S. in 1950 after lying about his Nazi past and then to deport him. The American Jewish Committee also expressed gratification over Trifa's expulsion. The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los. Angeles termed the OSI's "persever- ance" in the Trifa case " a fine example of the frustrat- ing, arduous and expensive process of denaturalization and deportation which the OSI has been forced to fol- low in order to remove this criminal, and others like him, from our society." The center also applauded the efforts of Dr. Charles Kremer of New York, "who, as a private citizen of thii country, but who is of Romanian origin, has pursued the Trifa case for over two decades to ensure that the world never forgets its responsibilities of the victims of the Holocaust." In Lisbon, Portuguese of- ficials said that Trifa, who had been the spiritual leader to about 35,000 members, of the Romanian American Orthodox Church in Grass Lake, Mich., had applied about a year ago for permission to live in re- tirement in Portugal as a stateless person.
