THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Your insight column on
Numbers 33:1-36:1 written
by Ed Greenstein (July 27)
was very interesting. His
theme, over the years, has
been echoed in the various
synagogues I have attended
whenever this portion of the
Torah is discussed.
What is even more in-
teresting is that I have
never heard a sermon about
Numbers 33:50-33:56. Per-
haps Moses forgot or dis-
obeyed the Lord's com-
mandment to tell the chil-
dren of Israel: "When you
pass over the (River) Jordan
into the land of Canaan
then you shall drive out all
the inhabitants of the land
from before you and destroy
their figured stones and de-
stroy all their molten im-
ages and demolish all their
high places. "And you shall
drive out the inhabitants of
the land and dwell therein
for to you have I given the
land to possess it.
In Numbers 33:54 the
tribes of Israel are to inherit
the land by lot. "Inherit" I
assume to mean forever.
"But if you will not drive
out the inhabitants of the
land before you then those
that you let remain (shall
be) as thorns in your eyes
and as pricks in your sides
and they shall harass you in
the land 'that you dwell
therein and it shall come to
pass, as I thought to do to
them, will I do to you."
(Numbers 33:55-56).

The night of
murdered poets

Thirty-two years ago, in
the dark cellars of Moscow's
Lubyianka Prison, on Aug.
12, 1952, after months of
torture and interrogation,
24 of the leading Jewish
writers, artists and poets
were executed, culminating
Stain's campaign to destroy
Jewish life in the Soviet
Union.
Although, the Soviet
Union has the third largest
Jewish community in the
world, it is the only country
without, a single Jewish
school for children! Even
private teaching of Hebrew
is a violation of KGB "rules"
and Jewish activists teach-
ing Hebrew in their homes
in small groups of three to
six people have been
threatened with imprison-
ment for "anti-Soviet ac-
tivity.'
Jewish scientists request-
ing to leave for Is-mel are
mow being stripped of aca-
. demic degrees. How can you
erase acquired knowledge?
In the USSR, we suppose,
simply by saying "If you
want to go to Israel we're
taking it away." This is con-
tempt, Soviet-style.
However, the newest tac-
tic may be the ultimate in
Soviet contempt for, hunian,,

rights. An official front
group called the "Anti-
Zionist Committee of the
Soviet Public," with
branches in several cities,
was formed last year. The
committee simply announce
that "emigration has stop-
ped because Jews who want
to have already done so." To
add insult to injury the
committee, made up of
prominent Soviets of Jewish
descent, linked and likened
"Zionism with the crimes of
Nazi Germany." Those
statements are whopping
lies, and only a loud West-
ern outcry will prevent the
Soviets from perpetrating
such contempt.
Thousands of Soviet Jews
have been refused permis-
sion to leave and their
names and addresses are
public knowledge and can
fill books: Hundreds and
hundreds of Americans
correspond with them, have
visited them and can'testify
to their tragic stories. '
The reverberations of
that infamous night of Aug.
12, 1952 are still being felt
among Soviet Jews. They
are not free to learn about
their past and unable to
carve out a future. Is it any
wonder so many want to
leave? Shouldn't they be
able to?

Robert St. John and Phil
Slomovitz — good friends of
Israel — don't like Uris'
novel either because they
claim it promotes hatred of
the Palestinians. This is not
the case: Uris' portrait in-
duces sadness, pity and
melancholy — not anger.
The tragedy of the Palesti-
nian Arabs, which Uris por-
trays so effectively, was the
product of self-immolation
over which the principal ac-
tors had no control.

Pro-Reagan -
statement hit

I take exception to the
statement made by Mr. Ben
Waldman in the July 27
issue of The Jewish News
(Page 21, "Jewish GOP
finds ally in Reagan for Is-
rael in '84").
Mr. Waldman declared
that Reagan is "very very
pro Israel." It is naive to
count on the pro-Israel
stance of any head of state.
No head of state is per se pro
any other state. It only ap-
pears so when their inter-
ests are served. Don't count
on it. It is naive thinking.
When Reagan makes
speeches that sound like
