Kahane scored
for remarks
on Arab§

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Chief Rabbinical Council
Monday denounced Rabbi
Meir Kahane's racist atti-
tude toward Israeli Arabs
and his threats to have all of
them expelled, saying that
Kahane did not "represent
the Biblical view on the
Arabs."
The council said that, re-
garding relations with the
Arabs, the binding rule was
formulated by former Chief
Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak
Kook, who advocated
mutual understanding be-
tween Jews and Arabs.
Meanwhile, efforts con-
tinued this week to intro-
duce an anti-racism bill into
the Knesset in a move to
thwart Kahane's vow to use
the Knesset as a platform
for his demands that Arabs
be expelled, once he is sea-
ted as a Knesset member.
Kahane's Kach Party won
one seat in the Knesset in
last week's elections.
The move to introduce an
anti-racism bill is
spearheaded by Mayor
Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem.

Jewish women
don't hold power

Montreal (JTA) — The
Canadian Jewish Congress
(CJC) has reported that
women are under-
represented in positions of
power in Jewish organiza-
ions in Canada.
This applies whether
women are employees or
volunteers, according to
CJC study reported by the
Canadian Jewish News.
The study found that while
75 percent of all salaried
workers are women, they
tend to hold lower-paying
secretarial and clerical jobs.
Dorothy Reitman, chair-
woman of the CJC law and
social action subcommittee
on the status of women, said
that the survey showed
that, "as in the general
community," women in
Canadian Jewish orgniza-
tions "are being ghettoized
into lower-paying jobs and,
when they do occupy higher
positions, they are not re-
ceiving equal pay for equal
work."
She said the study also
indicated that women vol-
unteers should be targeting
the nominating and per-
sonnel committees as a
means of effecting change.
