Farrakhan and
Jesse Jackson

Your article on Rev. Louis
Farrakhan was most in-
formative. The Jewish
community should realize
that a frightening episode
has just taken place in
American Jewish history.
Jesse Jackson has risen to
great political heights,
thanks to the facilities of
the Democratic Party.
Freedom of speech is his
right, but exercising this
right by way of a powerful
political party is another
story.
Jackson's anti-Semitic
history is well known. His
help in elevating Far-
rakhan into our country's
spotlight is also known.
Both of these anti-Semites
are now household words
among the blacks and other
minorities. All of this ap-
pears to have come about
thanks to the Democrats.
Unfortunately, the blacks
do not seem to realize that
Farrakhan's attack and the
threat against a black re-
porter is also a threat to the
rights and freedom that
they have been striving to
attain.
We have all overlooked
Jackson's credibility. Ac-
cording to a news article,
Jackson dropped out of di-
vinity school and then
joined a church and
emerged a reverend. Later,
he left the SCLC after some
financial misappropriations
were found. Ralph Aber-
nathy did not prosecute
Jackson or pursue the mat-
ter after Jackson left. This
is the background of a man
who was running for
President. A government of-
ficial is dumped because he
made an anti-minority re-
, mark, but the Democrats
allowed Jackson and his
remarks to stand.
To make things worse,
there are Jews who support
Jackson. A representative
of one Jewish group wrote a
letter to The Jewish News
defending Jackson. This
group overlooks the fact
that although Jackson
apologized for his remarks,
he initially denied them,
and then remembered them
two weeks later. This group
also overlooks Jackson's
initial reluctance to
criticize Farrakhan. The
Jewish media and leader-
ship were modest in their
outcry during all of this.
The individual Jew has a
powerful weapon with
which to fight back. Come
November, we must vote
against the Democratic
Party. This will send a mes-
sage to BOTH political par-
ties that the newly emrging
Haman and Hitler types
should not be allowed to
gain power through their
auspices.
Ivan C. Schatten, M.D.

and members of the City
Council, as representatives
of all faiths and ethnic ori-
gins, have appeared insen-
sitive in signing the May
11th Testimonial Resolu-
tion honoring Minister
Louis Farrakhan. I do not
condone anti-Semitic re-
marks or slurs against any
ethnic or religious groups.
The resolution signed by
me speaks of those contribu-
tions made by Mr. Far-
rakhan to the black com-
munity — no other infer-
ence intended or implied.
I regret that there was
room for misunderstanding
to the narrow position
stated in the resolution be-
cause that was certainly not
intended by me.
This resolution, state-
ments by Rev. Jesse
Jackson and statements by
Rev. Louis Farrakhan, have
caused some persons in the
Jewish community to say
that black-Jewish relations
have never been at such a
low point.
I disagree with this as-
sumption because relations
between two groups cannot
be judged only by what pub-
lic speakers may say. Every
black person does not accept
everything his/her spokes-
persons may say, just as
every Jewish person does
not adhere to everything
his/her more vocal persons
may say.
Black-Jewish relations
should be judged by the na-
ture of what happens when
persons from each group
come together. To that end,
we must find ways to have
more normal and natural
ways of sharing with each
other and then it would be-
come very obvious that
black-Jewish relations are
still warm, friendly and
cooperative. - _

Nicholas Hood,

Regarding your news-
paper's recent critical essay
regarding the Reverend Mr.
Jesse L. Jackson, may I re-
spectfully suggest that Rev.
Jackson has been a great
force for good for all Ameri-
cans.
Rev. Jackson has spent a
lifetime taking complex
truths and reducing them to
exciting language. By his
own account, he is a public
servant, not a perfect ser-
vant, and one prays that the

level of discussion by those
who disagree with his views
and positions on issues may
yet be raised to a level that
does civil debate credit.

5th commandment

RESIDENTIAL:

In responding to Rabbi
Jack Goldman's letter on
Ann Landers, please permit
me to remind the rabbi of
that which I am sure he al-
ready knows.
The fifth commandment
is stated without qualifica-
tion: "Honor your father
and mother, that you may
long endure on the land
which the Lord, your God is
giving you."
You are to honor your
parents, whether good, bad
or indifferent.
Your parents are God's
surrogate in the bringing
forth of life. Honor to them
is honoring God who is the
Father and Mother of us all.

Holocaust in
Afghanistan

Rabbi Irving Greenberg's
perceptive article (The
Jewish News, July 20, page
20) is accurate, apt and
timely.
Very few people know
that the Soviet Union has,
with greatest force and
brutality, indeed set the
stage for the purposeful de-
cimination of the Afghans.
What is sad and sickening is
that the Western democ-
racies are passively looking
on, and sometimes, with
their indirect assistance, it
appears that Soviet expan-
sionist policies will culmi-
nate in the total occupation
and subjection of all Af-
ghanistan. What is equally
worse, when and where
Soviet bombs, bullets and
chemical warfare fail, the
Marxist puppet regime in
Kabul unleashes a com-
plementary policy of mig-
ratory genocide.
The world needs to be in-
formed more on the Soviet
atrocities, and a concerted
effort should be made to halt
another Stalinistic/
Hitlerite barbarism and
tactic.
Happily, the Afghans are
determinedly fighting. We
need to support them.
