Officials briefed
on status of
Turkish Jews

New York (JTA) — "The
Turkish government has
granted special permission
for members of the Jewish
community to attend and
participate in an interna-
tional. Jewish gathering," a
principal leader of the Tur-
kish Jewish community re-
ported here to an executive
session of the officers of the
American Section of the
World Jewish Congress.
Jan Kamhi, honorary
president of the Turkish
Jewish community briefed
WJC officials on the current
state of Turkish Jewry and
their concerns, marking the
first such briefing in the
United States for American
Section leadership.
He explained that under
Turkish law there was a
general prohibition barring
all Turkish domestic organ-
izations from affiliaion with
international bodies and
that therefore the special
dispensation granted the
Jewish community to par-
ticipate in WJC activities
represented an extraordi-
nary action on the part of
the government.

Most olim
are newcomers

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — Of the
approximately 45,000
American olim now living
in Israel, some 80 percent
are relative newcomers,
having made aliyah in the
years following the 1967 Six
Day War, the Israeli news-
paper Ha'aretz reported re-
cently.
Meanwhile, according to
the newspaper, nearly one-
third of those Americans
who came to settle in. Israel
ended up returninga to the
United States. Dissatisfac-
tion with the Israeli
bureaucracy was cited by
many as the reason for their
return.
