Arab graduate
Speaks at
Hebrew U.

Jerusalem — A precen-
dent was set earlier this
month at the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem, when
for the first time an Arab
student spoke in the name
of his fellow graduates at
the university's annual
convocation.
Moin Halloun, one of nine
children in an Arab Chris-
tian family from the Mount
Carmel village of Isfiya, re-
ceived his degree in ancient
Semitic languages; he is the
first in his family to attain a
Ph.D.
Following the granting of
degrees, Halloun responded
for the graduates before the
assembled audience. He ex-
pressed the gratitude and
relief they all felt at having
completed a long and dif-
ficult course of study, and,
added a few words of greet-
ings in Arabic at the end of
hifi remarks for the sake of
the families of Arab
graduates in the audience.

German Green
Party delegation
visits Israel

Bonn (JTA) — The Green
Party, a minority opposition
faction in the Bundestag
with a record of hostility
toward Israel, sent a delega-
tion to the Jeviish state
prior to Monday's elections
for a five-day visit at the in-
vitation of the Progressive
List for Peace, a new politi-
cal coaltion of Israeli Arabs
and Jews.
A statement issued by the
party before their departure
from Germany praised the
Israeli coalition as an his-
toric movement promoting
Jewish-Arab understand-
ing. The coalition's platforin
calls for the creation of a
Palestinian state alongside
an Israel reduced to its pre-
June 1967 borders.
The Green Party, com-
posed largely of
environmentalists and
pacifists, is headed by Otto
Schily, a member of Parli-
ament who practiced law
before entering politics.
